Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of An Almost Perfect Christmas, written and read by Nina Stibbe.

'I vowed from a young age never to cook a turkey, and I never have - unless you count turkey mince (which you don't). I've seen the damage turkeys can do and the tyrannical hold they have over otherwise robust, rational people and my mother. My mother is not a foodie. But for as long as I can remember, once a year she becomes possessed of a profound and desperate need to serve up a perfect roast turkey. Faced with a walk into the village, though, she might think "oh, f*ck it" and decide to get a frozen one from Bejams on the 23rd and leave it to defrost in the downstairs toilet for not quite 48 hours.'

From dry turkeys to Christmas pudding fires, from the perfect present for teacher to the risks and rewards of regifting, Nina Stibbe offers her inimitable wisdom and humour on the most wonderful time of the year.

Short but sweet

Lovely observations by Nina as always. Laugh out loud at points. Just not long enough!

Underwhelming

I started listening to the book last Christmas in the hope it would make me laugh while
listening in the car on the way to work. Unfortunately my mind kept wandering away from the story because it didn’t grab my interest enough. I finished listening to it last week as I thought I’d give it another try but it had the same results.
If there was more feeling in the narration it may have been different.

Disappointing

After reading Love Nina I was expecting this book to be funny but it was disappointingly dull .

A bit dull

Sounded much more interesting when reviewed by “Women’s Hour”. Moments of mirth but generally a bit dull.

Too repetitive, I struggled to chapter 6 & stopped

Nina, I do love your writing but not this time. Too much stopping and starting, alot of pointless listing being narrated.
I'd hoped to learn something new, something to make Christmas less stressful but, I didn't.

A very British Christmas

A very funny run down of the pleasures and disappointments of family Christmases. So enjoyable.

Funny!

I could listen to nina narrating her books all day! It's a shame she doesn't read them all.
Chuckling all the way through. Feel like I know her or would like her if I did know her. Very comforting for some reason. Nina offers a matter of fact calm approach to cringey/uncomfortable circumstances in this and love nina.
