Summary

The #1 NYT BESTSELLER

A personal and urgent examination of Fascism in the twentieth century and how its legacy shapes today’s world, written by one of America’s most admired public servants, the first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state.

A Fascist, observes Madeleine Albright, ‘is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have.’

The twentieth century was defined by the clash between democracy and Fascism, a struggle that created uncertainty about the survival of human freedom and left millions of innocent people dead. Given the horrors of that experience, one might expect the world to reject the spiritual successors to Hitler and Mussolini should they arise in our era. In Fascism: A Warning, Madeleine Albright, draws on her own experiences as a child in war-torn Europe and her distinguished career as a diplomat to question that very assumption.

Fascism, as Albright shows, not only endured through the course of the twentieth century, but now presents a more virulent threat to international peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II. The momentum toward democracy that swept the world when the Berlin Wall fell has gone into reverse. The United States, which has historically championed the free world, is led by a president who exacerbates popular divisions and heaps scorn on democratic institutions. In many countries, economic, technological and cultural factors are weakening the political centre and empowering the extremes of right and left. Contemporary leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un are employing many of the same tactics used by Fascists in the 1920s and 30s.

Fascism: A Warning is a book for our times that is relevant to all times. Written with wisdom by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past.

Tremendously important piece of work

In essence, a history of fascism. Just as you shake your head in disbelief about the horrors of the past, Albright points out the alarming signs of fascism on the rise in the present. It is both the impeccable writing as well as of course the added bonus of her first-hand experience as Secretary of State that makes this an absolute must-read.

The message

If we do not take heed to the message of this book, we run the risk of being overrun by its truth!

Title misleading but extremely interesting

The one word title suggests something focused and technical. It is neither. Instead it starts with a freewheeling account of 20th century history and the authors own important role in international relations in the century’s closing decades.

There is a focus on the headline fascists but leaders with fascist inclinations are also covered, particularly as the narrative moves to this century.

Her recollections of negotiations with Kim Jong-il are fascinating.

The book was conceived before the Trump presidency and published during it. It’s concern for democracy and the institutions and habits that it rests on is very much centre stage. Post Jan 6th, this concern seems sadly understated.

In short, a good book by one of the great international public servants of our time that only disappoints if you were drawn in by its title rather than by its author.

Very persuasive thesis and informative

I listed to this with a deep respect for the author's views and admiration at her unceasing energy.
I also learnt lots about parts of the world skipped over by mainstream media.
I finished with a feeling of both resolve to do something and a deep well of concern at the enormity of the challenge

Looking back and looking forward

Anyone living in the US or UK should read this book. It gives you the hints and tips on what to look for in the stealthy slide to populist dogma. The fascism of the 21st century won’t be signaled by jackboots or brown or black shirts, but like the frog slowly brought to fatal heat in a pan of water. Or as Mussolini put it: “If you pluck a chicken one feather at a time, nobody notices.” Albright added that “there is a lot of feather-plucking going on right now.”
There is indeed.

The fight for freedom never stops

Makes a convincing case for why democratic values and freedoms must never be taken for granted and must continually be fought for. Allbright's style is clear and engaging. An intelligent world player with shedloads of experience and lessons to teach us about how fascism is born and grows. And how its seeds never die, but wait for the right conditions to flourish. The title is spot on. Should be essential reading for all politicians. But sadly, I doubt whether the ones that would most benefit from the wisdom of these chapters will bother to listen and learn.

An important book but fails to address China

Apart from China the many faces of Islamic fascism are also neglected. Syria and Saddam / Gaddafi were surely worth a chapter.

A measured tale with a sting in the tail

This monumental review of 20th and 21st century fascists and fascism movements throughout the world is thorough and thought- provoking. Don't just look to the past for fascism - Its roots are always there. A bit dry but still fascinating and crafted by someone who saw politics at first hand. Definitely worth reading

Brilliant summation of the state of the world

A warning - as in the title - is what it is. Insightful and thought provoking - a must read if you care about a democratic future.

Absolutely amazing book! One to keep

Madeleine Albright has written such a fantastic book regarding fascism dating back to Mussolini, Hitler, her own experiences personally added, all the way to Trump. Hard hitting, thought provoking and humbling with lessons to be learned throughout. I would definitely recommend. In fact, bought the hard copy for a family member.
