Publisher's Summary

At the age of 34, Polly Evans decides to fulfil a childhood dream - to learn how to ride a horse. So she goes to Argentina and saddles up among the gauchos! Overcoming battered limbs, Polly canters through Andean vineyards and gallops beneath snow-capped Patagonian peaks. This is the stampeding story of Polly's journey from timorous equestrian novice to wildly whooping cowgirl. It's a tale of ponies, painkillers and peregrinations - not just around present-day Argentina, but also into the country's glorious and turbulent past.

What the Critics Say

"Evans is an adventurer...Her writing is full of colourful anecdotes on taking tango lessons in Buenos Aires, attending polo tournaments and galloping across the pampas and into the mountains. This is a jolly romp of a read, with some good snapshots of local life." (Sunday Telegraph)

Interesting book but misleading title.

Where does On a Hoof and a Prayer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not the worst and not the best, somewhere in the middle.

What did you like best about this story?

Nothing in particular.

What does Lucy Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Different accents and tones of voice for different people, though she can't really sound like a man.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No.

Any additional comments?

When looking at the title, I thought the author had ridden on horseback around Argentina, not used transport and ridden when opportunities arose. I found the historical interludes interesting but sometimes they took me away from the story so was difficult to concentrate on it sometimes.
