Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now by Jaron Lanier, read by Oliver Wyman.

Jaron Lanier, the world-famous Silicon Valley scientist-pioneer and 'high-tech genius' (Sunday Times) who first alerted us to the dangers of social media, explains why its toxic effects are at the heart of its design and explains in 10 simple arguments why liberating yourself from its hold will transform your life and the world for the better.

Social media is making us sadder, angrier, less empathetic, more fearful, more isolated and more tribal. In recent months it has become horribly clear that social media is not bringing us together - it is tearing us apart. In Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now, Jaron Lanier draws on his insider's expertise to explain precisely how social media works - by deploying constant surveillance and subconscious manipulation of its users - and why its cruel and dangerous effects are at the heart of its current business model and design. As well as offering 10 simple arguments for liberating yourself from its addictive hold, his witty and urgent manifesto outlines a vision for an alternative that provides all the benefits of social media without the harm.

So, if you want a happier life, a more just and peaceful world, or merely the chance to think for yourself without being monitored and influenced by the richest corporations in history, then the best thing you can do, for now, is delete your social media accounts - right now. You will almost certainly become a calmer and possibly a nicer person in the process.

I did quit facebook on the basis of this book.

It's already been an eye-opening experience. The unhappiness and stress its caused me, being hyperconnected on social networks, has not been particularly helpful personally so its an experiment of challenge. Here's to face to face reality and the wonder and magic of simply dreaming. I was ready for some positive disruption and thanks to Lanier I have started writing and playing music again. Now that is what I call radical action! 😊

Enjoyable until

Was enjoying listening until he brought up vaccines and stated his opinions as facts. Why on earth a tech guy felt he knew best about vaccines is beyond me. Ruined the whole thing for me

An in depth exploration of what I have suspected for a long time

I deleted my social media accounts some months ago due to some of the concerns raised by the author in this book and, at the time, had no knowledge of the books existence.

Having now read the book I can only say one thing.....

I AM NOT SORRY!

This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to use social media

Brilliant and informative. This should be part of or replace the t&c of social media sites. You will be wiser for reading this book. I’ve gifted several people already.

Great idea, partisan delivery.

The problem of social media and turning off crosses the political divide. This book takes a politically partisan approach and turns on President Trump and Fox News. I suppose that's to be expected if you know about the author and the terribly divided USA. In days where "liberal" journalists call for the outing of innocent teenagers on social media, inviting people to commit acts of violence against them the author could have taken a non-partisan or bipartisan approach to this subject.
I get it that the US is very divided politically. If I knew this book took that kind of approach though I would never have bought it.
The pervasive influence of social media and the withdrawal from it is a very important subject unfortunately this particular book will confirm your "Trump bad" prejudice but won't help you dump social media.

It’s a must read

To get a better understanding of the book I will be listening to it again I usually do this with all of the books that I listen to as sometimes that you miss things and misunderstand certain important keys.

Generally overall it’s a good book and I’ve been off social media so this is reinforced my belief.

I'm deleting all but LinkedIn with 30 days

I'm recently Google free. Secure email in Germany, Lineage OS on my phones with no Google at all and I now host my own cloud, office and notes via NextCloud.

I will admit, I've never been active on Social Media so deleting my accounts is not such a big deal, but before I do, there is one last message to broadcast, Read This Book!

Disturbing Insights into Social Media Companies

I was excited to listen to this book and it did not disappoint! It's a useful guide to the way social media and search algorithms track us and offers ways to think about breaking our addiction to these platforms
