Summary

The Dark Net is not a separate realm but one that stretches from popular social media sites to the most secretive corners of the deep web. It is a world that is rarely out of the news but one that is little understood - and almost never explored. In The Dark Net, Jamie Bartlett presents a revelatory portrait of the Internet's strangest subcultures: of trolls, drug dealers, hackers and political extremists.

Great book but its missing Chapter 7

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dark Net?

Great exploration of the variety of Dark Net content and more importantly teh cultures that build up in the environment.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I listened to it as quick as I could.

Any additional comments?

This audio version is missing chapter 7 of the complete book. Which is a real shame. I have never found an audio book with a missing chapter before. It means you miss out on the chapter on self-harm and pro anorexia. Hopefully they will fix that

Missing a chapter

Book is pretty good, but the audible version is missing a chapter. Give me back my credit!

This should be entitled “Darker side of the net” NOT Dark Net

It was 5 chapters and 4 hours in before any meaningful comments lasting more than 3 sentences about the Dark Net really appeared.

Nearly 2 hours was about Trolling and there is lots about Cam girls.
Unless you have never been on the internet before and know nothing about Silk Road which is discussed very briefly, then this book isn’t going to educate you.

To try and pull out a positive, the narrator is okay.
I am sorry I can’t find anything more positive to say, I wish I could.l but I think an honest view is useful to help those on the fence about getting this book like I had been.

Dark net still abut dark

Some if the content was about surface net stuff. I actually wanted more info on the dark net. Nicely read and nicely written.

Incorrect title

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really - for a book entitled "The Dark Net" it has a surprisingly loose grip on the topic. It is mostly a book of case studies/scenarios which start on the dark net and then rapidly drift off topic.

The first 1hr 20mins talks about the origins of the dark net in what could have been condensed into about 10 minutes.

Chapter 4 is 5 minutes on the dark web, and 42minutes on a case study of a sex offender with no further reference to the dark web.

Some of the content is interesting and makes you question things, but it is off topic from what you expect from the book.

If you’ve listened to books by Jamie Bartlett before, how does this one compare?

No

Have you listened to any of Matt Bates’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No

Could you see The Dark Net being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

No

Don't Waste Your Money

Some bloke talking about what he sees on Chaturbate, has nothing to do with the dark net

Didn't want it to finish!

Brilliantly researched and written, points well made with the ebb and flow of great writing. The narrator is a perfect choice, entertaining and full of character... the different characters certainly added entertainment value! one of my faves.

I've learned a lot

This is a great book with a compelling narrative, exploring the dark side of the internet, without ever being too technical. It gave me a different view on the dark web and is gripping, sad, terrifying but definitely always thought provoking.
I've finished it in one go. Having said that, there is one thing I found mostly unnecessary. The narrator tries to give each person a unique voice, which comes in handy when listening to dialogue, however often it is entirely unnecessary and can be difficult to understand.
