Classic lectures come alive

It is very difficult to top any review on the work of Feynman. Remember that he was a Nobel prize winner and the World's greatest physicist of the second half of the 20th century. These lectures are intended as a primer in physics for first and second year undergraduate students. When Feynman was lecturing, the lecture theatres were packed out with students and visitors. The books which were published from these lectures come in 3 large volumes and have all the chalk board diagrams as presented in the lectures. I read these 20 years ago and have just obtained a set for myself. Imagine that now it is possible to read along with the genius giving the actual lecture! Feynman has a streetwise New yorker slang accent and a rapier wit to go with it. Imagine having a tape recording of Newton, Aristotle, Plato, Peyps, Chaucer or Socrates. Then you would be getting nearer to Feynman. Brilliant and Outstanding. If you get hooked beware that there are 20 volumes which gives around 120 hours of recording.

Great material, ill suited to audio book format

You can hear Feynman writing on the chalkboard and gesturing at diagrams and equations there. But listening to him read the equations (without seeing them) is difficult on a good day. Listening to him merely point to one alredy on the board (i.e. nothing but a chalk click) is impossible.

Despite that, you do get to get hear Feynman himself, in his voice with his own interesting style of presentation, including some bits of humor. There are interesting qualitative bits of information along the way, which can be picked up without seeing the equations, that still make it worth listening to.

This review applies to volumes 1 & 4 (the two I have tried). "Six Not So Easy Pieces", while similar in that it's a recording of his lectures, is much better suited to audiobook format as the lectures are more descriptive.

Love the enthusiasm, need the lecture notes!

it is magical to hear Richard Feynman give these lectures. I have the books, but it would be do much better if I could download a pdf of the lecture notes to go with this audio book format.
