Paddy Clarke is ten years old. Paddy Clarke lights fires. Paddy Clarke's name is written in wet cement all over Barrytown, north Dublin. Paddy Clarke's heroes are Father Damien (and the lepers), Geronimo and George Best. Paddy Clarke has a brother called Francis, but Paddy calls him Sinbad and hates him because that's the rule. Paddy Clarke knows the exact moment to knock a dead scab from his knee. Paddy Clarke loves his Ma and Da, but it seems like they don't love each other, and Paddy's world is falling apart.

Superb - Roddy Doyle is a genius
Brilliant book, worth all its plaudits and stands the test of time. Only slight issue, Aidan Gillen's voice is so well known, it took a good while for me not to be hearing his other characters instead of Paddy Clarke. Powerful storytelling, brilliantly written ending .

Brilliant!
Wow! Just brilliant! The narrator is perfect for the book. When I first started listening I thought "Crikey! What is this?!". The story and the narrator transports you straight into the mind of an eight year old boy running riot in Ireland. It's very funny and entertaining, and the innocence of the story is also very sad. Just BRILLIANT!

Paddy Clarke - Outstanding!!!
This was a fantastic listening text. Gillen's brogue is entrancing. Doyle's dialogue and depth of character development and deep-seated issues discourse, totally destroyed my capacity do anything but sit and listen every chance I had; until it was finished.

What exactly was the point of that?
There is absolutely nothing likeable to this story and no point. Loads of gratuitous torture, both of humans and animals. The story itself is a disconnected stream of consciousness and illogical ramblings. The narrator’s accent makes it difficult to understand at times. I really don’t get why this book got so many awards and seems to be so well liked by many. To me, it has absolutely no redeeming features at all.
