Summary

From the best-selling author of My Sister's Keeper comes the riveting story of a murder that shatters the picturesque calm of Amish country - and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer defending the woman at the center of the storm.

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live "plain", Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within - to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past reenters her life.

Brilliant

I love the way Jodi writes her stories and what she writes her stories about! I couldn’t stop listening!

Terrible Narration

I had a hard time persevering to the end of this because of the narration, the only reason I toughed it out was because I wanted to know what happened. The narrators' harsh voices do not suit the majority of the characters, especially those of the Amish. The only time the harshness remotely suits the characters it is for the prosecutor and the detective, two characters who are not in as many chapters as everyone else. Even so, it was really hard to listen to the prosecutor during the courtroom scenes because, like another reviewer said, he ends up sounding sleazy or angry ... especially when it was Suzanne Toren's turn to read, her voice was really jarring.

The fact there are two different narrators is very distracting as well because their voices for characters were so different that it was confusing and hard to get used to. Just when you might get used to one narrator's voices for the characters, a new chapter would come along and go back to the other narrator. The most marked difference in voices was for one of the most important characters in the book, Katie. Suzanne Toren's voice for Katie sounded ridiculous and not even real, more like a voice someone would do for a puppet, although she did try to do an Amish accent. I ended up preferring Christina Moore's voice for Katie, accentless, but at least she sounded like a real person. I really wish there had just been one narrator for the whole book.

The story itself was pretty good, and it did keep my interest enough to make me put up with the narration. I will say it wasn't the best Jodi Picoult book I've ever read but not the worst either. I think I would have liked it better if I'd read it as a printed book.

Great book awful narrations

I first read this as a book and enjoyed it as much as I enjoy all of Jodi Picoult's books. But the narration and interpretation of this is really poor. It is painful and almost embarrassing how the Amish characters are read as though they are slow and stupid and some characters voices/narration are downright annoying. Would not listen to again.

Good book but not Picoults best

Overall I enjoyed this read but found the narrative a little slow at times. It kept me intrigued at first but the character of Katie was deeply unlikeable so generally lost interest.

Plain Truth

Jodi is undoubtedly very good at what she does, but after listening to 'Leaving time' and 'My Sisters Keeper', I felt the slower burn of this story.
I kept waiting for a shocking twist or revelation to kick start this tranquil story line, but none really came - even at the end.

I didn't see the narration as a draw back as some other reviews did. I saw it as a characterisation of how someone whose first language wasn't English might measure their words.
Either way - it didn't impact my listening.

Not a quick mover for the story arc, but a detailed world that we expect from Jodi all the same.

Loved every moment of Plain Truth

It kept me gripped from the very start. The characters drew me in, the story kept me guessing. Sad to have finished it.

Very interesting but went on a bit

It's an interesting look at what it means to be Amish and I found myself researching the subject further after finishing this. The main thread of the story was engaging enough to keep me listening but was quite a slow burn. This is my first Jodi Picoult listen so I'm not sure if this is her usual pace but I like a bit more action and a few more twists and turns.

Picoult doing what she does best

I really got into this book, as with most Jodi picoult novels I found it followed the typical legal and moral dilemma path, raising ethical issues and evoking conflicting & fluctuating feelings.

Although the pattern is familiar the story is unique and explores a community and lifestyle that is interesting to learn about/gain an insight into. Similarly, the obvious research the author has done in order to describe in so much detail and with such accuracy the legal arguments also enables me to be educated without feeling like I was in a classroom or being lectured to.

I think picoult's best craft is weaving such strong and meaty subjects and research inbetween layers of heart, human emotion and relationships. I think I am trying to say she opens up unfamiliar and perhaps unappealing topics and /or science by making it accessible through gripping drama.

Another brilliant story from Jodie Picoult

I go for Jodie Picoult books because I know I’m in good hands. This one didn’t let me down, and in the end I wanted to stay on the Amish farm, rather than have the book end. A lovely read

Terrific story

I really enjoyed this book, definitely a ‘couldn’t put it down’ story.
A fascinating incite into the Amish way of life and the way of thinking for the accused character, Katie.
Thoroughly recommended!
