Summary
Told in the voice of a young soldier, the story follows 24 hours in his life at the front during World War I, and captures his memories as he looks back over his life.
Full of stunningly researched detail and engrossing atmosphere, the book leads to a dramatic and moving conclusion. Both a love story and a deeply moving account of the horrors of the First World War, this audiobook will reach everyone from 9 to 90.

What a story
Beautifully told story. I got it because my daughter is doing it for English at school and thought it would nice to read it so as to help her with any assignments and discuss it with her. I didn't expect to love it so much. So moving. Highly recommend.

Poignant story beautifully told
I’m interested in all things First World War and this story didn’t disappoint. I’m not a young reader (66 years young) but would highly recommend this to all.

Very thought-provoking
A very somber and thought-provoking story. Draining at times too as it contains a lot of sadness, unfairness and death with hardly any moments of joy or hope to lift the spirits occasionally. Mr Morpurgo has pitched this perfectly with year 6/7 children in mind - it has a clear message and uncluttered writing style with plenty of interesting themes for discussion. Well narrated by Jamie Glover.
