Summary
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is the classic working-class novel. It was written in 1906 by an impoverished house painter, Robert Tressell, and within its framework contains a manifesto for socialism. It tells of the appalling working conditions of a group of painters and decorators and their struggle to survive at the most basic level. It is moving, grimly humorous, and tragic. It has sold over six million copies worldwide since it was published, and it has the power to change lives.

A must read

Very different type of story
Really enjoyed listening. The characters really came alive and the political message was very clear. A long book but very well read and draws you into the world of mugsborough fantastic

A modern classic!
I read this book 20 years ago as a young Carpenter and never forgot it. I was slightly anxious about revisiting it in audio format but I must say enjoyed it even more. It is heart breaking and hugely important at the same time.

Timeless & relevant to all audiences.
This book illuminates the lives of working people & employers/business owners. Focussing on all we consume & the need to understand urgent actions needed to improve, peoples lives. Many give to charity but let's stop imagining if there was never a need for foodbanks, charity clothes & credit unions. Imagine instead that employers & business owners (big or small) offered everyone employment to nourish mental health & wellbeing, a true living wage that the upper echelons of society agreed for the better of humankind. Aristocracy and upper middle classes hang on to wealth that does not fit into shrouds. Make them go through the eye of the needle by example & stop all the hypocrisy of charity balls while their workers & children choose between heating & eating. You do not have to be there but it helps to walk in another person's shoes.
This book is looking through the eyes of another century but unfortunately not much has changed as we head into another recession while the wealthy count their millions, as usual.

Written in a way to alway be timeless
How sad I am that his message is still true of the world today.
This is a harrowing listen at times, written in a time before the welfare state it is the reason we need one.
The Tories have not change and the foolish voters of the working class are still duped to voting for them; the same now as then.
This should become part of a school lesson, but like other texts which focus on the brutality of those who seek profit and money at any cost, it could become a forbidden text. It speaks so much truth about the 'ruling class' the Dodgems, Sweathams and the Rushems of the world.
This is a very moving listen.

Outstanding narration!
This book is as true today as it was nearly one hundred years ago. Extremely well written, you can emphasise with all the characters, they all have their own opinions. It’s definitely an eye opener this book, to what you know and what you think you know.
I read this 30 years ago and couldn’t relate to it. The narrator just made this one of my favourites.

A timely reminder
Being the unabridged version this is a long book. And does labour the point now and again but well worth sticking with as it shows how far things have come. But serves as a timely reminder not to become complacent.

Should be required reading
It was recommeded to me and I'm so glad I read it. It resonates as much today as it did when first written. The story is as entertaining as the message is powerful!

This book should be read in every school. It should be part of the national curriculum.
Oh, but they won't do that will they!
After reading this book no working class person should ever vote Tory again.
Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson was a hero to many a working class man but he was just a con man.
The book is as relevant today as it was when it was published.
