Summary

This isn’t your grandmother’s book on meditation. It’s about integrating that "spiritual practice" thing into a life that includes beer, sex, and a boss who doesn’t understand you. It’s about making a difference in yourself and making a difference in your world - whether you’ve got everything figured out yet or not. Lodro Rinzler is a bright and funny young teacher with a knack for showing how the Buddhist teachings can have a positive impact on every little nook and cranny of your life - whether you’re interested in being a Buddhist or not.

Does what it says on the tin.

This was a good audio book. I enjoyed it and I do feel like I have learnt a lot. Broadly I would like some more work into arranging the concepts. Maybe a better summary chapter at the end that lays out exactly what the advice and exercises were. But that may also be my low attention span kicking in. Great book overall!

Interesting bits interchanged with generalities

Some parts of the book were really eye opening, other parts were either repetitive, cliche or too theoretical. The good parts are worth the listen though, so I do recommend to listen to this book. The audio quality of the reading is mediocre.

Should not be in audio

Some books work well on audio. This is not one of those books. There are too many references to Asian terms to remember vs in written format you can visualize the word when thinking about it, and highlight to review later. There are also too many lists of how to's in each section. Plus the author seems to constantly reference his teacher. Which by the way, is an incomprehensible name given how quickly it's spoken. I was left thinking over and over again, why did I buy this book? I should've just bought a book by his teacher. I listened to the entire book in places where I could be fully engaged in the listening. It just seemed to drone on. I was truly looking forward to this book but, was left wanting so much more from it.
On the plus side, the author/narrator, had a very pleasing and soothing voice. He also seemed genuinely interested in the reader gaining something from the experience and the knowledge he was trying to impart.
If you are thinking of buying this book, I would highly recommend buying the hard copy. I am left wondering if I would have learned what I wanted to if I had read vs listened to it.

Enlightening

This is a great intro to meditation practice and what it can do for you. While some of the topics in the book are clearly aimed towards the 20-something crowd, I was able to identify with them from the vantage point of a 40-something.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone looking to find ways to reduce stress and be more present in their life. I've already started using this in my daily life to be more mindful.
