Summary

Robinson Crusoe, first published in 1719, was Defoe’s first novel and survives as his best-known work. Loosely based on a true account of a Scottish sailor—Alexander Selkirk—it is a tale of one man’s fall from grace and progress to redemption. The account of Crusoe’s life, scratched out with rationed indigo ink on a dwindling supply of paper salvaged from the hull of a wrecked ship, speaks eloquently of the tenacity and ingenuity of the human spirit.

Fantastic story!

Daniel Defoe’s classic adventure story, written 300 years ago, and still fresh, absorbing and unfailingly interesting. The narrator does a great job, maintaining good pace throughout and somehow capturing the ‘old fashioned’ flavour of the book, transporting the listener into a time capsule of the 1700s. It’s a story to return to again and again over the years, in unabridged form, of course.

A good classic.

As one of the few works of literature I have read, this was good. Just short of outstanding, as you can find yourself somewhat lost in some patches, but the recording was impressive and the story was one to remember.
I recommend to people who are into literature or curious about literature classics.
Decent!

Excellent narration.

This was a very engaging performance by the narrator. He really helped bring the story to life, especially with the different voices towards the later part of the tale. I thoroughly recommend this spoken version.

Amazing story.

Love this story from childhood and it still survives time. Maybe a younger reader would have been better. I don’t think the old attitude is too grating as this emphasises the times they lived in. Firstly the book is wonderful and this is an honest effort for an audio book which I listened to in a few days.

Quite Good

Perhaps the reading performance could have been better. I quite enjoyed it though, a bit of a classic.

Survival on a desert island

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would recommend it as its a classic, but also an insight to life 300 years ago

What other book might you compare Robinson Crusoe to, and why?

There are plenty of castaway tales and each has its own merits

Which character – as performed by Ron Keith – was your favourite?

Is this a trick question!!!! Why Robinson Crusoe of course.

Any additional comments?

This book has moments where it is hard going but given that it was written 300 years ago, it is still an amazing piece of writing. If this had been written today, Mr Crusoe would not have survived without 1. the app "How to survive on a desert island" 2. A stash of prozac, 3. The reality film crew. However he used his ingenuity, and strength of mind to survive which makes it an interesting read.

Stunning novel

This book is as relevant now as it was then. The treatment of fellow humans: peers, employees, partners, slaves, races and religions. The treatment of countries visited. The treatment of animals.

As gripping as any adventure story I’ve ever experienced

Now I understand why this book was considered essential reading on the English Literature Curriculum whilst I was at school .. Stimulating & mind broadening.
