Summary

The acclaimed best-selling classic of Holocaust literature, winner of the Booker Prize and the inspiration for the classic film Schindler's List

In the shadow of Auschwitz, a flamboyant German industrialist grew into a living legend to the Jews of Cracow. He was a womaniser, a heavy drinker and a bon viveur, but to them he became a saviour. A stunning novel based on the extraordinary true story of German war profiteer and factory director Oskar Schindler, who came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II.

In this milestone of Holocaust literature, Thomas Keneally, author of Daughter of Mars, uses the actual testimony of the Schindlerjuden - Schindler’s Jews - to brilliantly portray the courage and cunning of a good man in the midst of unspeakable evil.

Magnificent!

Like I presume a lot of people born in the 60's I had never heard of Oskar Schindler until Spielberg's movie "Schindler List". I watched the film not long after its release and freely admit that it brought me to tears, having listened to this book which covers a whole lot more besides I find it extremely difficult to find the correct words to give it the review it truly deserves.
Awesome, extraordinary, brilliantly narrated I can only insist that you add this to your library. I have only just finished listening to it and am eager to get back to chapter one and start again.

incredible & affecting I smiled and cried listening to this story of Oskar Schindler's efforts to save the people at great cost to himself & he could see beyond the war and the cruelty that was being inflicted but the nazi Regime,to hold onto your morality while all around everyone is losing theirs this book isn't just a story it's a matter of judgment for the reader of what would you do ?

Beautifully told story of hope

Having never seen the film, I downloaded the book. I was slightly concerned that I would find the subject too difficult to see the book through.
I have listened with admiration, optimism and sometimes joy to the actions taken by Oskar and those around him to thwart the horrors of that time.
I particularly like the fact that the story is told from the memories of those who lived through it with no attempt to fictionalise dialogue. It is beautifully researched and put together.
A combination of food for the soul and warnings from history.

Outstanding

Wow. if you were moved by the film and it's heart rending true story then the book will move and astound you even more.

The story is compelling, made even more so by the fact that every word of this is true.

Fabulously read by the narrator with great professionalism and nuance.

Simply a must listen.

Gripping story...and great narration

This is a most moving story, not spoiled by having seen the film in the 90’s; and I’d wonder about the experience of the reader who encountered the material for the first time. Oskar Schindler, speculator and saviour is an undeniable hero who rescues Jews from the Nazi machine at great personal risk, though also carries some ambiguity as a profiteer.
Although the dialogue is partly fictionalised, it’s crucial to the flow of this true historical account, and is gripping and compelling.
I really enjoyed the novelty of an Australian narrator, appropriate in view of the author and his excellent pronunciation of Polish, Hebrew and German really contributed to the authenticity.

An Incredible but harrowing history

Heart wrenching. Beautifully narrated and convincingly voice acted. I was brought to tears at times. Parts of this book will never leave me and have profoundly affected me.

If you listen to only one book , make it this one.

This book has the power of truth to make you experience an array of human emotions. It will bring deep sadness, but also surprising joy. A brilliant book beautifully narrated, covering a unique and brave,if flawed, man and his humanitarian response to a very dark period in human history.

Schindler’s Arc

Hard to listen to but worth the commitment to hear the actions of mans inherent inhumanity to man and the few who are prepared to stand up for their beliefs. I cried more at the epilogue by the author. We are all empowered to make a difference if we dare.
