Summary

In the wake of civil war, Bren Cameron, the brilliant human diplomat of the alien atevi civilization, has left the capital and sought refuge at his country estate, Najida. But now he is trapped inside Najida-which has been surrounded by enemies- with the powerful grandmother of his ally, Tabiniaiji, atevi leader of the Western Association. Ilisidi, the aiji-dowager, is not inclined to be passive and sends Bren into enemy territory, to the palace of the leader of the rebels.
Bren's mission is to negotiate with Machigi-a young atevi lord who has never actually seen a human-and somehow persuade him to cease his hostile actions against the west. Is Bren a shrewd enough negotiator to stay alive, and not alienate Ilisidi or Tabini, while also representing the interests of their enemy?

The story continues

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you've been reading the Foreigner series, then you won't want to miss this book! The fighting is in and around Bren Cameron's country estate, as Bren must negotiate with Machigi to prevent a full out civil war. Again.

If this is your first contact with Cherryh's Foreigner series, stop! You really need to go back to the very beginning of the series. There is way too much that you've missed to start with this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ilisidi and the young son, Cajeri. The dowager continues to be a powerful and unpredictable force, with an agenda of her own. And Cajeri is a continuing surprise.

What does Daniel May bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narration, though a bit slow. But the Atevi voices feel right.

Any additional comments?

A great series. Highly recommended!!

Fine SiFi

Where does Betrayer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The book is a classic, the best long series I know of and I have been reading Science Fiction for over 50 years. Just start at the beginning of the Foreigner Series and DON'T STOP.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Betrayer?

The 8 year saves his grandmothers life.

What about Daniel May’s performance did you like?

He reads with a love of the story, very very impressed.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed - cried and happily missed meals.
