Summary

2019 Independent Audiobook Award Winner for Apocalyptica

Survival can be a lonely existence...or not. The reality of the situation always comes down to a simple decision: What kind of world do you want to build?

The survivors have come to settle in the mountains of Wyoming, fighting day in and day out to establish a home for themselves in a near-empty world. Things are good at first; scavenging is a workable, short-term solution that seems to be providing all they need.

But they know that it’s only a matter of time before the food runs out. They need to scramble to find a sustainable solution before the clock stops, and for a little handful of people up in the mountains, the odds don’t seem very favorable.

Further south, a new band of people migrates across the map, running on fumes and searching desperately for a place to settle. All around them, as resources run thin, the world grows colder and more violent.

It’s getting worse out there, always getting worse, and it’s starting to look like survival might just depend on how violent they’re willing to get....

Loved the first book, so couldn’t wait for this one, was a bit worried at first, in the first few chapters but so glad I stuck with it, just got better and better.

Brilliant read

This was even better than the first, and yet the next two books after this are even better still! It really made me care about the characters and the voice work was brilliant.

Great story with engaging characters

It’s the 2nd in what’s turning out to be a brilliant series, expertly brought to life by RC Bray.

Utter Bollocks

I actually like Bray playing characters! He plays Gibbs and the rest of the ‘meatheads’ very well.
There is far too many of the same type characters.
The bastard love child of Terminator/Rambo.

However, when Bray is Narrating the story it is like a day at the ranges with a GPMG. Sentences are read in 3-5 round bursts. He reads in a pure monotone voice, it is migraine inducing.

The story is very dull with not much action.
I’ve lost track of the amount of characters and couldn’t give a monkeys’ about them.
You can spot things coming a mile away i.e whatever the teachers name is.

When I started this it was still fiction

Now it’s more like a preparation for worst-case scenarios.

Sometimes I feel like it’s a bit too much detail in some areas (especially about the weapons) but I realise that’s a key item in their survival and one of the elements that Gibbs has to get across to all the non-marines. The hope, building, supporting each other is really inspiring. The switching of narrators is confusing at first but adds to the complexity and completeness. I hope it ends well! 2 more books to go...

Decent yarn

There are thousands of books like this out there, 99% are garbage.
This is one of the 1%. A decent yarn, brilliantly spun by R C Bray.

The first one is good too.
