Summary

The peaceful Eldarin were the last of three ancient races. The mystical Oltor, healers and poets, had fallen before the dread power of the cruel and sadistic Daroth. Yet in one awesome night, the invincible Daroth had vanished from the face of the earth. Gone were their cities, their armies, their terror. The Great Northern Desert was their only legacy. Not a trace remained for a thousand years....

The War of the Pearl had raged for seven years, and the armies of the four Duchies were exhausted and weary of bloodshed. But the foremost of the Dukes, Sirano of Romark, possessed the Eldarin Pearl and was determined to unravel its secrets.

Then, on one unforgettable day, a dark moon rose above the Great Northern Desert, and a black tidal wave swept across the land. In moments the desert had vanished beneath lush fields and forests, and a great city could be seen glittering in the morning sunlight. From this city reemerged the blood-hungry Daroth, powerful and immortal, immune to spear and sword. They had only one desire: to rid the world of humankind forever. Now the fate of the human race rests on the talents of three heroes: Karis, warrior woman and strategist; Tarantio, the deadliest swordsman of the age; and Duvodas the Healer, who will learn a terrible truth.

What a shame.

I really enjoyed this book when I read it a long time ago. Therefore I was excited to see that it had a brand new audiobook version. I've managed 4 hours but I cannot suffer it any longer. The narration is quite honestly terrible. There is absolutely zero emotion, "evil" characters are given stereotypical goblin-esque voices which create about as much malice and intent as a rock. Inflections and tone never match the scene. Timing and pacing is poor. It's just bad.

Avoid this one and just re-read the book. That is what I'm going to do.

Poor narrator

Very poor English for an English man.
Although some of the voices were well done
The goblin voice of Dace was irritating and broke any immersion into such a brilliant story!
Disappointing and needs to be re-recorded.

The narrator belched

how can someone so obviously talented do such a half arsed job . the narrator burps at one point, and makes so many mistakes during reading the book it makes you wonder if English is his first language.

don't get me wrong quite a good narration in some ways but at times he obviously wasn't reading a story he was just reading a shopping list .

weird

Disappointing.

After reading the book a while ago, I purchased on Audible but was disappointed with the narration. The voices didn’t match the characters, especially Dace, the alter ego psychopath. Felt like I was wading through just to get it finished at times. I’ll stick to my old paperback copy of this one!!

Good book, poor narrator!

The book was very enjoyable. The reader was terrible. He mispronounced many common English words which lifted listener out of the story, also his characterisation was very poor, making most of the characters sound alike.

Interesting one off story

Kept me wanting to know what happens next , would have liked a sequel to see how the civilisation evolved.

Great story, terrible narration.

I wish I read the reviews on this one before purchase, it’s a great story, but the narrator does a terrible job of telling the story, he seems to have found a way to make every character sound like the snake from jungle book, or an ent for lord of the rings, I couldn’t finish listening to it in the end as I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated with him.

Dark Mooon

Dark Moon is a great story by David Gemmell it has a few twists and turns, a dark slightly mad sorcerer and a race of alien bad guys, all in all a great story. The only let down was the performance of the narrator witch I tried hard to ignore but don't let that put you off if you like David Gemmell's work this is a great story.
