Summary

Jack Jupiter knows zombies. He's written about them for years. So when Jack's mother passes away in a freak car accident involving a half-eaten deer and a pack of cigarettes, he also knows something's up. Now, Jack and his fiancé, Darlene, are forced to go back to the dreadful town of Woodhaven, Ohio, for his mom's funeral.

But what he doesn't know is it might be their funeral, too.

A few months before Jack and Darlene's arrival, a mysterious flu-like virus swept through the town, infecting nearly every citizen. Now, like ticking time-bombs ready to explode, everyone is dropping dead. But they aren't staying dead. No, they're coming back as flesh-eating zombies.

Not only will Jack Jupiter have to bury his mother, confront high school bullies, and save Darlene, but he'll have to fight the dead in order to stay alive. And these aren't like the zombies from his books.

These walking corpses are real.

Narrator spoilt

Not a bad story, reasonably predictable, but why does the narrator sound like a spoilt child who’s telling a story about being naughty...the inflection is all wrong for me, shame

Decent freebie

Decent enough as a freebie but wouldn’t have liked to pay for it. Narrator sounded a bit like Agent Smith from the matrix which I found irritating but that’s a personal taste thing. A bit cringey at times, killing zombies with dumbbells though was a fun angle.

Not a bad zombie story

There were several things I didn't like about this zombie book.

The characters didn't behave like I would expect, not asking questions like "how did this happen", "what do we need to know" and "is this happening across the country or just here". Nobody even tries watching TV. Things happened improbably fast, with the townsfolk turning very quickly when though bitten characters turned slowly. The sudden loss of cell phone signal and power was also implausible.

The characters didn't interact particularly well, though that might change in subsequent books in the series where it appears that a group forms. The main character appeared like awhiby and entitled jerk, though he develops during the story and becomes quaesi-heroic by the end.

The narration is monotone and with pauses after each sentence, making it annoying and making the main character sound more dislikeable.

On the plus side, the story is interesting, the character develops, learning from his experiences, recognises his bad qualities, and turns into something better by the end, a group forms, and they have trust and purpose.

Book 1 was free, I listened to the end (which I often don't do when I don't like a story), I'm glad I did, and I've bought the omnibus edition with the first 4 books.

I was able to get past the annoying aspects and find a good story which made me want for more.

Basic zombie story

Nothing that special, a little cheesy here and there but also nothing awful or bad in general.

Good for an easy zombie listen.

Good Story

I thought this was a good start to a undead series and would like to see how the story goes.

Shame about the narrator

I’ve no idea why they used a narrator who sounds like he’s in his late 40s to play a character who’s meant to be 28.
A reasonably good zombie story but full of annoying moments where the main character keeps freezing right when he needs to get moving. A bit too much teenage angst and repetitiveness.
