Summary

Long-listed, Audible.com Best of the Year, 2007

Long-listed, Audible.com 100 Audible Essentials, 2007

Audie Award winner, 2008

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Potential NOT reached.

This book is a classic. This book is great...but
why oh why is the main narrator doing other narrators characters? What is the point in hiring a whole cast of amazing actors (e.g The Baron sounding like Darth Vader.) for particular characters if the main narrator is just going to do most of their parts, with a mediocre effort in my opinion. I don't feel his voice varys enough from character to character. So after 20 hours, his voice began to grate on me a little.
That is the only thing that bugged me about this audiobook. The story is deep and hard to follow at times, but it pays off with a decent climax.

Good narration but inconsistent

Took me a few hours to get into it, but enjoyed it once it got going.
Would say though that having a large voice cast is fine, but you have to be consistent. There were many occasions where even in the same chapter the same character would be first voiced by the narrator, then by a different actor... and Scott Brick has such a distinctive voice that if he's going to do several characters he really needs a different accent!

Excellent - but...

Really great book, which I knew, generally incredibly well performed by the voice actors themselves. personally I found the background noise irksome. clearly meant to raise drama in dramatic scenes etc but it just felt hammy.

Loved it

This is part one of three and it is excellent.
I have already read the book and found this an absolutely brilliantly read book. The characters are played with charisma while the narrator does a fantastic job. The book is read in a calm unhurried fashion and is very easy on the ear.
This one I will definitely listen to again

Fantastic

This audio book has held me captive through the first part of a painful recovery from a bad accident. Brilliantly read and a gripping saga which I read and loved when the bloodiest came out. Highly recommended.

Keeps going right to the end

My wife bought me a SatNav for my birthday which is a great present but which could find its self used only occasionally. However it came with a built in Audible player and so I decided to give it a go. I use it on my way to and from work and I've even used it whilst mowing the lawn. Dune is the first book I've listened to on it and it was superb. I could write pages on all the twists and turns ( within turns within turns ) but the best part for me was that it keeps you going right until the very end. I read lots of books and I'm quite used to guessing the finale several chapters from the end but with Dune, even as the last scene played out, I had no idea how it would end...I'd recommend it to anyone sci-fi buff or not.

Dune...something different.

Not something I would normally go for but glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.
The narrator was very good at distinguishing the different character voices so I didn't get confused.
If you like sci-fi then I'd recommend it.

A wonderful listen

I intially thought that I had made a mistake in trying this sci-fi genre, the unusual names and places would surely be impossible to overcome. However, with a wonderful narrator, sound-effects and added voices, I was soon transported to the terrain and culture of Dune, absorbed by the politics, intruiges, ambitions and dangers encountered by the characters. I was dissappointed when I came to the end.
