Summary

In this prequel to the apocalyptic horror series, an overnight gig turns into a nightmare when zombies start coming for blood.

After a long day on the job, house painter Gus Berry is looking forward to relaxing and spending some time with his girlfriend before returning to work the next day. But none of that is going to happen.

Gus’s coworker Benny has found them a painting gig at the local Mollymart East, and it has to be done by morning. If Gus and his crew can complete the work on time, it could mean huge business with a major grocery store chain.

But as Gus and his fellow painters are about to discover, the much-anticipated zombie apocalypse doesn’t start with a bang; it starts on a Monday. And barricading themselves inside a megastore isn’t the end—it’s only the beginning . . .

Another Chance to Walk With the Mountain Man!

When I reached the end of the Mountain Man series it was a bittersweet moment. I'd reached the end of the story of one of the most real-feeling characters of this rather crowded genre. I'd walked with the Mountain Man and his companions through many adventures and like most I felt like I had a friend in Gus. For the most part he was just an ordinary guy doing his kind of best to cope with his world being torn apart and infested with zombies with all the horror that brings.

The slightly odd thing about the original series was that by the time we start with Gus the zombie apocalypse has done its worst and we meet a character who is already through the shock phase and is well into the longer term mental and physical effects of being one of the few survivors.

This new book gives us a chance to walk with Gus again. A slightly younger and less jaundiced Gus but still very much Gus! We get a healthy helping of great Gusisms and lots of Blackmore's trademark zombie horror and pointed dialogue. Gus treats us frequently to his own brand of the coarse male crudeness that we all love him for and naturally with the voice of RC Bray (who else?) bringing it to us all feels right in Gus's dystopian world.

It's a chance to walk with the Mountain Man once more and fill in some of the blanks from the original series. Thanks Mr Blackmore!

Great Addition To The Series!

Any additional comments?

I loved the Mountain Man book series and this is certainly not a let down.

Once i had finished the original books i was guttered that it had finished so had to buy the prequel straight away. It is a great insight into life before the mountain man and how it all started going wrong for gus. The story line wasn't as great as the original but if your a fan, it really wont matter.

RC bray is also a phenomenal audio book narrator, top draw!

Amazing

Great listen and ties the story in well. Some shocks in the book too. Nic job.

Brilliant

Extremely good series, I would love for it to go on but unfortunately I realise it can't. R.C. Brady is an excellent narrator and the books would be nowhere near as good without him.

As Good as it Gets!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Mountain Man series published before this prequel and am pleased to say that it is equally as good.
I have to say a big thank you to Simon who reviewed this book first - I wouldn’t have know it was available otherwise.

Wow, amazing.

My only problem with this book was how fast I finished it. Never had a book so difficult to put down. Provides the much needed prelude to Gus’s journey, if you like the other books; this is an absolute must have. Wickedly funny and beautifully performed.

Welcome addition

Welcome addition to the series. As easy a listen as anything, which says a lot considering the setting. Unfortunately it ends all too soon ...

An interesting addition to the series

This prequel is better written than other novels in the series- not so many overblown and ridiculous metaphors and similes, for example. There is also much less crudity, and the story is better for it.

RC Bray's narration is excellent.

Of course, if you have read/listened to the rest of the series there is little real tension, (as this is a prequel!) It's still really enjoyable, but if you are new to the Mountain Man series, start here.

I enjoyed this very much; I just wish it had been longer!

Utter guff

How do people get paid for writing such formulaic nonsense? Total waste of time. Don't use your credits on this.
