Earth is dying. Thousands of workers, who live in the vast caves beneath Mars, mine the precious elements that will make the planet habitable. They are Earth’s only hope. Until the day Darrow learns that it’s a lie. Mars has been habitable - and inhabited - for generations. Darrow disguises himself and infiltrates their society, intent on taking them down. But the surface is a battlefield - and Darrow isn't the only one with an agenda.

Not for everyone

I can see why this book is popular however it's not for everyone. It starts quite interesting however, it just goes on to be a very long type war a bit like hunger games when they are in the arena. There is a lot of strategies and smart moves to get to the top. I started to get quite bored. It would be good for someone who likes books about wars. There are lots of characters it's hard to remember who is who.

(spoilers but you find out early on in the book) The book is set in the future where everyone lives on different planets like mars and pluto and there are people in charge called golds and all the other 'colours' serves them. Reds are at the bottom our hero is a red and he finds out he is a slave to the golds so he wants to get revenge and let everyone else know. So he infiltrants the golds to try and get to the top because that's the only way he can stop the golds.

I haven't yet finished the book but I feel it is dragging on at the moment and it needs to move on from the type war thats happening and move on to more exciting things. The idea of the book is very interesting but it needs to escalate faster than it does.

excellent stuff,

Rattles along at a good lick, solid characters with well defined motivations and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Drags a touch at the end of the second act but comes back fighting at the end.

all the joy of the YA genre, but with none of the glittery love interest and paper-thin annoying male characters. plenty of claret splattering around too. imagine jennings goes up pompei and captures Lord Stark and Snape.

off to buy the next book now.

gory damn good.
