Summary

Kimball Kinnison and the Galactic Patrol again take up battle with Boskonia. The warfare leads to some odd corners of the universe and some stranger worlds. They include the planet Lyrane where a matriarchal society exists and the frigid world of Onio, with its incredibly alien inhabitants.

Critic reviews

"The most towering figure in science fiction, thanks to the enormous scope of his novels." (Isaac Asimov)
"If you wish to understand the roots of modern science fiction, you have to read the Lensman saga." (Allen Steele)
"A finalist for a special Hugo Award for All-Time Best Series, 'Lensman' is considered by many sf heads to be the greatest of the space operas and clearly a source for such successors as Star Trek and Star Wars." ( Library Journal)

A classic series of class Sci Fi books ruined

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A classic series of class Sci Fi books ruined by poor narration and interpretation. I wouldn't suggest any Brit buying an audio book narrated by Reed McColm.

Second Stage Lensman : Lensman Series. Audio.

Where does Second Stage Lensman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Reed McColm being an American and reading an American novel is a bit of a new experience for me as I've not heard many U.S. audio books. All in all though I quiet enjoyed listening. I shall certainly be adding further audio titles in this series.

What other book might you compare Second Stage Lensman to, and why?

Storywise I'd compare this book to the Martian novels of Burroughs as regards a story which moves along at an unflagging pace, with plenty of action on almost every page. To fully appreciate this story it is best to read the earlier books in this series, especially Grey Lensman which introduces the reader to the principal characters --- Kinnison, Clarissa, Worsel, Tregonsee, Haynes and Lacy.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I would not call Reed McColm one of my favourite readers of Audio Books but I've heard a lot worse. Perhaps you need to be American to enjoy his voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At over nine hours in length it's hard to enjoy at one sitting, but the beauty of audio is, that just like a paper book, you can pause when tired and pick up later where you left off.

Any additional comments?

An excellent book to read and in the main better to listen to.
