Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Fantasy, 2016

After the War of the Gods, the demons were cast out and fell to the world. Mankind was nearly eradicated by the seemingly unstoppable beasts, until the gods sent the great hero, Ramrowan, to save them. He united the tribes, gave them magic, and drove the demons into the sea. Ever since the land has belonged to man and the oceans have remained an uncrossable hell, leaving the continent of Lok isolated. It was prophesized that someday the demons would return, and only the descendants of Ramrowan would be able to defeat them. They became the first kings, and all men served those who were their only hope for survival.

As centuries passed the descendants of the great hero grew in number and power. They became tyrannical and cruel, and their religion nothing but an excuse for greed. Gods and demons became myth and legend, and the people no longer believed. The castes created to serve the Sons of Ramrowan rose up and destroyed their rulers. All religion was banned and replaced by a code of unflinching law. The surviving royalty and their priests were made casteless, condemned to live as untouchables, and the Age of Law began.

Ashok Vadal has been chosen by a powerful ancient weapon to be its bearer. He is a Protector, the elite militant order of roving law enforcers. No one is more merciless in rooting out those who secretly practice the old ways. Everything is black or white, good or evil, until he discovers his entire life is a fraud. Ashok isn’t who he thinks he is, and when he finds himself on the wrong side of the law, the consequences lead to rebellion, war—and destruction.

Critic reviews

"This book has everything I like in fantasy: intense action scenes, evil in horrifying array, good struggling against the darkness, and most of all people - gorgeously flawed human beings faced with horrible moral choices that force them to question and change and grow." (Jim Butcher, creator of the New York Times best-selling Dresden Files)
“I loved the book, it was great, fast paced, with wonderful characters, and also a lot of wonderful scenes that screamed to be painted.” (Larry Elmore, legendary, award-winning artist, and cover artist for Son of the Black Sword)
"Correia skillfully sets in motion this story of plots within plots, revealing complex, sympathetic characters and black-hearted villains with equal detail and insight. Full of action, intrigue, and wry humor, this exciting series launch promises many more thrills to come." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great Story & Characters

I enjoyed this book. The story was intriguing & interesting and the range of characters within the different factions of the fictional society wide. I do like stories with mysterious/ mythical links to pre-history origins that explore how those have mutated over long stretches of time and how the peoples of the present time react to new (old?) revelations.

Goodish

Would you consider the audio edition of Son of the Black Sword to be better than the print version?

why would i spend £10 on the book and £20 on the audio. i just bought the audiobook.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

well this is the issue it wasnt that interesting. the main characters there are 3-4 are dull. not much humor or much at all to them. the concept of the book is good. but in his past books Mr L Ms books had contained humor and battles. i am a huge fan of both his other series . but so far this one is meh.

Which character – as performed by Tim Gerard Reynolds – was your favourite?

none stood out.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

no

Any additional comments?

this book i be leave was an attempt to do a different style of writing and while the frame work was good and the foundations solid it isnt that good a book. 6 out of 10 at most. its a fantasy world which seems inspired ish by anthny ryan blood song. i mean there are similar trends. chaotic world. military order religious nut job style and a hero who cant be beaten and falls out with his order.

it was distinctly meh. on many levels

listen with an open mind. but this is no magnus

Amazing! Great world and heroes

Love how the world is painted and this is the first fantasy I've enjoyed with a male hero! Full of blood, magic and deceit. Some nice twists and turns, now to start book two!

A bit clunky initially

The characters seemed a bit 2 dimensional and clunky initially blindly believing things to be black and white. However, as the book progressed and different characters were introduced who saw the world differently I realised that maybe it was a fair reflection of the world outside the book as well and me being “that’s ridiculous people wouldn’t believe that” was more about me than the author’s writing.
Once i’d moved past that really enjoyed the book and character development, already got the next one.

Exceptional High Fantasy

Hard to believe that this is the same author as the Monster Hunter series. This is a perfectly executed example of the genre with great narration to complement it. Both compact, personal and epic.

Very good conflicts, both thought and fight.

This book carries good thought provoking story lines and characters. Interesting twists, and what I hope to be a really good set for the next one. Hurry up please.

A really captivating story read really well!

Found it hard to put it down. The structure and pace is so fluid you feel like you are watching it on a screen!
