Summary

What the world dreads most has happened because of a mutated avian bird flu (H5N1) pandemic. It has ravaged the globe. Only 2% of the population has survived. A dying mother knows that her young child is among the few remaining immune to the virus. What will she do to ensure his survival before her own coming tragic death?

Meanwhile, Graham has buried his last remaining family member. Following his father's advice to make it to the family cabin, he meets with triumph and tragedy; learning new rules along the way. Just when he thinks he's finally got a handle on this new world, he's taken by surprise, as he learns he's not alone. A hidden yet vulnerable community of Preppers are nearby. Will he find the strength to escape these dangers and go on living? And more importantly, will he have the ability to protect those he's come to trust?

Great story

Fast paced and gripping. I thoroughly enjoyed this on audible and loved all the main characters.

Good beginning

It was advertised as a post-apocalyptic medical thriller. It was interesting to read about a purposeful community of preppers. I like the characters and yes, it was somewhat slow at times, but I liked the time that was devoted to story development. I am definitely reading the rest of the series!

Excellent

Excellent story, and hard to believe that there is soo much in common with what we have just come through. Its important to say this book was written well before the recent past, and while the disease is mentioned throughout the book, it isnt the focus. The story is about the people, and how communities are still formed and how even those who are isolated like the preppers there are those who will not stand by and watch innocent lives suffer when they can find ways to help. A powerful testimony of how humankind can be the best even in the worst of times.

great read

great read with a great plot and very 3d characters that the writer let's us attach too. Didn't want to put the book down due to anticipations. Unlike most books and I listen to a lot on audio, 2 things let this down. one was the voice narrator who had a fairly flat tone throughout and seemed to lack intonation where you knew characters would have had it and it often ruined it a little for me. it ruined the characters at times and their effect. The writer who had been doing g so well let us down at times making reference to thoughts of characters which they would never have known. Graham would not have known what had happened before he arrived and the writer causes the reader to lose faith and say HEY HOW WOULD HE HAVE KNOWN THAT! this happened often and throughout. The ending was a real diapsapponyment as it jumped and skipped scenes that the reader wanted to access. as if the ending was suddenly rushed. this was a real let down at the end and out me off buying through next book but who knows.

Really enjoyable listen and great story

The characters were fully developed and it was good to listen to an uplifting 'pandemic' book. You could really picture it happening. Looking forward to listening to the next few books. This author is a favourite of mine for this genre.

I was given a free copy by the author but the review is entirely my own.

Very very very disappointed with this book.

How this book made it to publication and then to audio book I will never know much less understand.
A five year old boy is given to a survivor of the pandemic and they go to hide for the winter in a cabin. That sentence takes eight chapters in the book. Two dogs get killed as the main action. The rest of the time is the dilemma of which bikes they will take, one is pink not a good colour for a boy even during a pandemic. That is the level of this literature (and I call it literature to be sarcastic).
Then you have the narrator; at first I thought he was terrible, then I realized that it was the sound of a man having his spirit crushed by a horrible task.
The editors and producers of this book should be ashamed to sell something so below standard,
This is my first one star in 12 years.
