Publisher's Summary

"I loved The Death House. It's moving and totally involving. Pinborough writes with vividness and emotional resonance. I couldn't put it down." (Stephen King)
This is an exceptional, contemporary, heart-breaking novel.
Toby's life was perfectly normal--until it was unravelled by something as simple as a blood test.
Taken from his family, Toby now lives in the Death House: an out-of-time existence far from the modern world, where he and the others who live there are studied by Matron and her team of nurses. They're looking for any sign of sickness. Any sign of their wards changing. Any sign that it's time to take them to the sanatorium.
No one returns from the sanatorium.
Withdrawn from his housemates and living in his memories of the past, Toby spends his days fighting his fear. But then a new arrival in the house shatters the fragile peace, and everything changes. Because everybody dies. It's how you choose to live that counts.

A touching story of first love

I loved this. Beautifully narrated, this caught me from the very beginning and kept my attention until the very last syllable.

"Love Story" meets "Romeo and Juliet"

This was not at all what I expected. It's a teen love story pure and simple. It is not science fiction unless the definition is stretched to breaking point.

We never discover the underlying reasons for the protagonists being where they are, nor is there any attempt to describe the kind of dystopia that would condemn children to isolation on the basis of a single blood test.

I listened to the whole thing expecting the 'science bit' but it never arrived.

The narrator does an excellent job, and if you like love stories then I expect you would like this.
