Summary

The Blood Angels Chapter of Space Marines is under threat. Having obliterated all human life in the Red Scar region of space, the largest tendril of Hivefleet Leviathan ever seen in the Imperium has converged and is making relentlessly for Baal.

To face this awesome foe, Commander Dante has called upon the Successor Chapters of the ancient Ninth Legion. The Sons of Sanguinius gather in numbers not seen since the dark days of the Horus Heresy. Thirty thousand Space Marines stand ready to thwart the Great Devourer, save the homeworld of their primarch, and prevent the consumption of billions in the Ultima Segmentum beyond.

But the tyranid swarm numbers in the trillions, and they are not the only danger to the chapter’s future. As the galaxy slides toward a terrifying new era, events far away threaten to unleash a greater evil. A further enemy must also be overcome, that of the Black Rage that lurks in the souls of all Sanguinius’ bloodline.

Surprisingly good!

Haven't followed Blood Angels stories for years but this always stood a chance of being good with Guy Haley writing it. You never know which way its going to go, a must read!!!

epic

the anguish of a falling chapter and the heroism to continue fighting nonetheless. The satisfaction in the tying in with the overall universe and the far reaching consequences of converging events

Over drawn and over filled but still interesting.

Whilst overall I did enjoy this book. I certainly fell asleep during it several times, which I cannot say of its predecessor ‘Dante’. This is due to the monstrously slow pace for the first half before the action begins.
There are however several stand out characters, and amazing visceral imagery in some of the fights to rival any 40k book I have listened too. And that redeems the book in the large part for me.
That said, I don’t think it would have any great effect on a listener who isn’t interested in space marines of the blood angel line. As the amount of time dedicated to going over their history and politics it is far too significant and over drawn.
Overall I liked it, but it was not a brilliant book. Which tried to accomplish too much in one go and suffers for it.
