wierd

Had its moments. but a most wierd ending that to me, felt unfinished. Narration was good, strong accent but I coped lol

Are you a West Highland listener? If so, be warned

It always feels like such churlish pedantry to complain about details of pronunciation, especially in a case like this when the reader's performance is actually really good, however if you KNOW how Gaelic place names should be pronounced it becomes really hard to suspend disbelief when a character claiming to be a native Lewisman is constantly in your ear in an urban Scottish grate referring to the story's main location Eilean Mhor, as Aileen More, this will probably not bother you at all if you don't know the difference but if you do it will drive you nuts! He doesn't know how to say other gaelic words or place names either. Such a shame because it spoils a great story and a great performance. If you're reading this and don't know what I'm on about please excuse the apparent nit picking, it will honestly not affect your enjoyment unless you know the difference.

Finished feeling disappointed

What did you like best about The Lighthouse Keeper? What did you like least?

The story started off brilliantly, there was tension and suspense, the reading of the diary was great all these tantalising snippets kept you guessing, but then the ending came and it was as if the author had run out of ideas, time or paper and just quickly scribbled any old thing down. Such a shame, I was left with the thought "but........"

Could you see The Lighthouse Keeper being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I think the first three quarters of it would make for very good tv, I don't know if there is enough there to do a long series, but they would definitely have to rethink the ending.

Steven Cree has the sort of voice that is very easy to listen to and I would happily listen to any other story he has narrated

Lovecraftian feel... shame about the ending

This is quite a good book, with a strong atmosphere and a very Lovecraftian feel of "things Man was not meant to know and non-Euclidian shapes from beyond space and time. It is intriguing, unnerving, but the author chooses to end without any explanation ( granted, explanations of mysteries on this scale could not be grasped by our puny minds) and that defeats, in my opinion, the purpose of the book, which because of this failure becomes a long exercise in prose about the unknowable. In a similar vein, "Dark Matter", read by Jeremy Northam, manages to be bizarre AND extremely entertaining...

The lighthouse keeper

This novel demonstrates a successful syntheis of historical information with an interesting surreal speculation about resolving the mystery. Do not expect a historical analysis alone but sometimes the enjoyment of a novel is in the surreal and the atmosphere....Excellent narration.... well worth a listern , enjoyed it immemsley.

I very interesting plot

I have only given this book a 3 star as I felt the ending was messy and not nearly as well thought out as the rest of the storyline. It also harped on to long about the past imn the book when it would been interesting to hear how the modern day visitors to the Island felt and handeled the unusual and unexplained happienings.



Great narrator really brought the story alive

Interesting despite the author's best efforts.

The dialog is terrible, the narrator gives the timid characters confident voices and the confident, assertive characters are given timid voices. There are a couple of gaping plot holes you could drive a bus through and there's too much religious/scientific/gibberish spoke during periods of stress.

Despite all the above it's oddly compelling, probably because it's based on a true story. (sort of)

Essential listening.

This is a slow burn for sure. A great story by a hugely talented writer with the added bonus of being read properly make this a double thumbs up from me. Bought originally as a companion on a six hour drive, I realised I wasn't even close to the end as I got close to my destination, so added a scenic two hour detour across the North Wales coast to get to the end. Excellent. Didn't even mind paying for the extra petrol...

Lost a couple of stars for the ending

I loved this story, I couldn't put it down, especially listening late at night with the lights off! I like the narration too, the Scottish accent is easy on the ears. The only thing that let it down was the ending. I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for some conclusion to the mystery that had been building throughout the book and was so disappointed to hear the Audible message telling me the book was over. If you like open ended tales then this is the book for you but if, like me, you want some kind of explanation and a neat ending, you will be disappointed.

Good naration, rubbish ending!

I thoroughly enjoyed the narration and found myself gripped by the story wanting to hear more. Sadly dissapointed by the ending and thought I must be missing a second book. I agree with David from The Wirral about rushing it out to market. It felt like the author also got bored and decided to "put his pen down"
