I am a complete sucker for time travel books. I really prefer original ideas, but a standard time machine will do in a pinch. I have to say that I really liked the idea of a trailer being used. It does fit in, doesn't stand out, and can be used for housing while you are away. Much better than Bill and Ted's phone booth (sorry, nothing beats a TARDIS, though).
What I really enjoyed was the mother/daughter team figuring out how to get back home, and the fact that the visited more than one era. Most time travel stories focus on one time zone. You go back to a specific period, or you bounce between one past time zone and the present. Here, Nortman takes us on a TRIP. Just like you are supposed to do with trailers. Trailers are meant to move, and so we see several different decades as the duo zips through time like a pair of runaway clock hands.
I must say that Nortman absolutely nails the vocab and slang for each era she send the family off to, the jargon is natural and realistic, and it flows. She also describes the clothing to a tee as well as attitudes and concerns. If you think we a re paranoid now, her trip to the 50's will make you glad you don't have to look over your shoulder at every turn or suspect your neighbor of being a commie.
Gilbert is serene as the narrator of this tale. I attribute a lot of the success of the flawless use of dialogue and slang to her nimble narration. It was a real pleasure to listen to her take on this trip, and my only regret is that I had not heard of her before this. She is a very talanted narrator. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
This is a book for all ages, my kids will love listening to this on our next CAMPING trip! Seriously, if you have any love for time travel stories you will enjoy this book.
