How wrong was I?

This is amazing. When I reviewed The Passage I had lost faith with it about a third of the way through. I did go back to it and fell in love with it.....and then The Twelve. Justin Cronin has done something amazing - weaves a story which reflects and reviews the Passage whilst moving the story forward. I needed to read both to totally appreciate the writing, the story, and the premiss. If you love Stephen King 'end of the world tales' like the stand and under the dome, you will adore this end of the world survivors story. The characters are amazing and well written, the story is interwoven between the Passage and the Twelve and I am awaiting with glee part 3 of the trilogy. This is not the glittery romantic vampire tales you may be used to - it is deeper, darker and so much much more. Move over Frannie Goldmsith and Katniss Everdean there is a new girl in town, and she is my new virtual best friend ....... Amy Bellafonte.

What a waste of time!

The Passage was one of my absolute favorite books. I found that the story was fresh, well written and totally engrossing - and the narration by Scot Brick was excellent. Therefore, I had eagerly awaited the release of The Twelve and downloaded it on its first day of release on Audible. To say that I was bitterly disappointed by The Twelve would be a criminal understatement!

The great narration by Scot Brick is still there, but the quality in the writing and story that was present in The Passage is gone. It's like the book has been written by a different author.

The characters that I Ioved in Book 1 are totally unrecognisable and the story drags on without purpose. I lost interest and didn't care what happened to the characters, as they were really getting on my nerves!

It's quite sad that it seems the author wanted to turn the brilliant story that he started in The Passage into a trilogy just for the sake of it. I will most definitely not be getting Book 3 when it comes out.

Disappointed

Let me start by saying that I loved The Passage, the audio version was splendid, great characters, exciting narrative and brilliant writing. I have been looking forward to listening to The Twelve since I finished The Passage 2.5yrs ago, I downloaded it the day it came out. Boy was I in for a sugar crash.

Same great narration by Scott Brick and some great sections of writing but the book has been written so self consiously in the knowledge that it will be translated to the big screen it started to become annoying. There is character cliche after character cliche and no end of bad one liners. The narrative really didn't flow and I started to switch off and really not care what happened to the characters i had loved so much in The Passage. Such a shame that money and hype have some how taken away the soul of what this trilogy could have been.

Darker than night thicker than blood, just despair

This is even darker than the passage, the sense of angst and the bleakness of the situation soaks every page not in red blood but black despair, this is a book that makes 1984 seem happy by comparison.

We start at the beginning and are reintroduced to a minor character that moves the plot in the future a recounting of the Passage story in a biblical format is given, to remind you of old events then we move 90 years ahead into a future where some of the old hero's are still trying to save humanity against big odds, the vampires are organized and have plans of their own and they dispense with all niceties to feed enslave and grow.

This is a good second part if you do not mind blick apocalyptic living, torture, terror and terrorism al through the story, for me the length of the book is oppressive and represents way more time than I want to spend in a hellish place.

Superb novel

Before listening to this book I would recommend "The Passage", which is the prequel. Both books are long and a little long winded at times, but well worth the effort. I love these books.

Absolutely amazing

This is my second time listening to this trilogy and I’ve enjoyed it as much as the first. I’m sure in maybe another 5 or 10 years I will listen again and enjoy it exactly as I did the first and second time round. The narration is amazing, It flows so beautifully and I have enjoyed every single second. Thank you Mr Cronin it’s been a pleasure.

Flawless performance of a fantastic book

Flyers! Where to start with my review? Firstly, Scott Brick is an excellent narrator. He brings characters to life, he creates images in my mind that I wouldn't particularly get from reading the book.

Secondly, I have never cried over a book before... until now. I feel a deep connection with the characters and even on my second read through I cried at the second to last chapter of The Twelve.

In preparation for the third and final book (which has been released today) I have listened back through The Passage and The Twelve and both have been just as good, if not better than the first time I listened to them.

Definitely my favourite book trilogy of all time.

Fantastic listen

The second in the trilogy is just as compelling, if not even more so. I love the narration which definitely adds to the overall experience and I love the fact that every single character has their place. I'm off to listen to "The City of Mirrors"...

Not As Gripping As The Passage

I absolutely loved the story telling of The Passage and the characters. I have listened to it 4 times since its release and in the run up to the 2nd book's release. So, The Twelve; The narration by Scott Brick is still outstanding. However, I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. This book I found VERY confusing. The story didn't flow as well as The Passage and it was unnecessarily darker, gory and disturbing than the first book.At times it reminded me of gory parts of The Stand and Swan Song. Some of the plot just didn't make sense and I was left feeling quite frustrated at times. I will give it a listen again in the future, maybe before the third instalment comes out. The story was good, but the flow and writing wasn't on parr with The Passage.
