Summary

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men. However, despite being descended from a long line of Wardens, 16-year-old Errol Magnus believes it to be the absolute worst job on the planet: How could a single occupation simultaneously be the most boring, abominably stupid, and extraordinarily dangerous profession imaginable?

But when his older brother Tom - the current Warden for their region - goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands, where monsters abide in mind-boggling numbers, to find him. During his search, Errol crosses paths with - and finds himself stalked by - the legendary Wendigo, a monster with preternatural strength and speed, as well as enhanced senses of sight, smell and hearing...and an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Now Errol must do the impossible and not only escape from the monster (something no one has ever done before), but also avoid the unearthly legacy it leaves on all its victims - a terrifying curse known as Wendigo Fever.

It's very short

This has everything you need - good guys versus bad guys, a sub-plot and a reasonably suspense-filled climax. I kinda enjoyed it but felt it should have been allowed to develop over a longer story.

Straight on to Book 2 in the Series ...

Really enjoyed this, will listen the rest of series

I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

Narration 8/10
The narration is pretty good and gets you excited when it needs to but the speed is a bit on slow side. I sped it up to x1.3 sicne the very beginning and I found it perfect after that.

Story 8.5/10
The story follows a young warden, aka monster hunter of this universe, who is forced to take action after the current warden of the area goes missing, thus being led into an encounter with the "Wendigo" monster that he'll have to defeat. I actually enjoyed the story, it was fun and fast paced, listened to it in a single go and didn't get bored at any point. It's a simple story so that you can relax, listen to, and easily follow.

Overall I found this Audiobook pretty good, I enjoyed it and at some point I will listen to the rest of the series. Could be a bit longer (it's just 3h long). Would suggest for both adults and YL when you want a short enjoyable and easy to follow fantasy action story.

Entertaining and Energetic.

I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

An entertaining an energetic short listen. The narrator really brought the characters to life in this short story.

I thought the story was well written and was action packed in such a short audiobook. It was clear that Errol did not want to follow in the family business and become a Warden but as soon as became apparent that his brother Tom has gone missing, he headed out to find him along with Gale.

Errol's quick thinking saved his and Gale's life out in the Badlands along with his knowledge and training, all thanks to his brother Tom. He still has not found Tom, but Errol will not give up looking as he believes Tom would not give up on him.

Errol doesn't want to inherit the family business

Errol really doesn't want to inherit the family business. Since his father died and his brother took on the position of Warden for the area, Errol has been conscripted as deputy and is being trained, whether he likes it or not. A Warden's job is dangerous, fighting back the hoards of supernatural creatures that keep attacking. When his brother goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands to search for him. There he crosses paths with the legendary Wendigo and will need everything he's ever learned in order to survive.
Quite a short book but a good introduction into this series. I'm intrigued to read about the other magical creatures Errol will encounter in future.

Coming of age with monsters

This book is a fun read. A young man who works with his brother as a Warden to control supernatural beings but dreams of moving to the city. He is thrust into a new reality when his brother vanishes and he is required to track a monster to protect his neighbors and himself.

This is a first person telling. The story is interesting and at times amusing. The young man must develop determination and understanding to survive.

The narrator did a very good job with this material.
