Summary
They were told that the only crime they must never commit was to be caught. Women of enormous cunning and strength of will, the Shadow Warriors' stories have remained largely untold - until now. In a dramatic tale of espionage and conspiracy in World War II, Shadow Warriors of World War II unveils the history of the courageous women who volunteered to work behind enemy lines. Sent into Nazi-occupied Europe by the United States' Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE), these women helped establish a web of resistance groups across the continent. Their extraordinary heroism, initiative, and resourcefulness contributed to the Allied breakout of the Normandy beachheads and even infiltrated Nazi Germany at the height of the war, into the very heart of Hitler's citadel - Berlin. Young and daring, the female agents accepted that they could be captured, tortured, or killed, but others were always readied to take their place. So effective did the female agents become in their efforts, the Germans placed a price of a million francs on the heads of operatives who were successfully disrupting their troops.

Narrated by a Sat Nav?
Whilst the content is flawless and somewhat riveting, this audiobook is completely spoilt by the lazy use of sound board which in short makes it sound like it’s being read by an elevator or sat nav....it’s so irritating and such a shabby poor quality method of recording narrative. I’d like my credit back and hope that audible refrain from ruining future publications with shoddy quality recordings.

Stilted presentation, with phonetic pronunciation
French words must have been phonetically
written, as if for a child. Very clear voice and presentation, would be good for someone without English as a first language, but lacks some complexity and depth for native English speakers. I'd rather have read the book than listened to this. Pity.

Hoped for more
I don’t quite know what I was expecting but, certainly, didn’t get into the book until the latter chapters,
I don’t like fiction about World War 2 but do like to feel some tension when reading about our heroes/heroines - I didn’t feel this, with this book. Read, to me, like more matter of fact which, II suppose it was!

A must read
This is a fantastic insight to what the women agents of the SOE and later the OSS went through during WW2 and those who set up these organisations if I was on holiday I would not put this book down and it show the stupidly of our MILITARY system that they was not awarded a VC Or at least the MC . Definitely I would recommend.

Exceptional decision to have Kate read this book.
Compelling account of the women soldiers of WW2 for whom women of today owe so much. And yet, society still has not been fully able to view women as equals to men. Thank you to the authors for sharing the war-time events of these women.

Great side of history seldom seen or written about. Plaudits go to all who were involved.

Fascinating and poignant history
Incredible work on those that we forget the most and honour the least. Without these folk I very much doubt I would be here today. Incredible, read this after listening to The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, another good work but more focused on the men involved.
