Summary

Even the darkest secrets can't stay buried forever.

Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood.

Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children's home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. DI Kim Stone fast realizes she's on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it's too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid ,and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

A detective hiding dark secrets, Kim Stone will stop at nothing to protect the innocent. Silent Scream is the first book in the series. Watch out for Evil Games, coming soon.

Critic reviews

"A superb debut by an assured new writer. Blending sharp wit with emotion, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride alongside DI Kim Stone and look forward to the next outing." (Mel Sherratt)
"I absolutely loved it!.... This one is one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, and that includes mainstream authors such as James Patterson! I would seriously put this book in the same league." ( Fiona's Book Reviews)

Worst Narrator EVER

This is an excellent story and the author is brilliant - but the Narrator .... Oh my goodness I have seldom heard worse - no actually, I have NEVER heard anything this bad. No idea of where sentences started and finished and paragraphs must be a stranger to Jan Cramer. The accents she used were diabolical, no idea of pronunciation of place names, and the speed at which she read was terrible.

I will happily read any book by this author, but I emphasise read - I will never listen to another unless the narrator changes.

Good story but poor naration

I tried to get into it three times as my daughter loved the Kindle version. However, I gave up due to the unconvincing narration.

Story ok performance of narrator..........

The story for a commencement of a series was somewhat predictable in its plot. I am unsure of the pedigree of the author so will not comment further but I fussed who the bad guys were fairly early on in the story and so the challenge was waiting for the end to see if I was right. I was. Which provided some satisfaction but I would much rather have been surprised.

The story is set in The Black Country and wider West Midlands area, yes the Black Country is an area of the West Midlands and no it is not Birmingham!

My main criticism is of the narrator. As awful as the Black Country dialect is the narrator in trying to emulate it did a rubbish job. Most of the time when she was trying to be the character from that area she was simply sounding like a cat that was being strangled. Very very slowly. Not a good performance. Either it should have been read straight or someone from the area should have narrated it.

BTW I can say those things about the Black Country as I was born, bred and raised there so I understand the sensitivities of the area and its proud tradition.

Good story

Good story and yes I did enjoy it except for the Black Country accent which was terrible. Also the pronunciation of Cradley Heath. It is not Crad key.

Good Story But Lacked Depth - May Contain Minor Spoilers -

I am an avid reader and book lover and maybe I expect to much after reading some recent greats, like I AM PILGRIM and THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN.

This book is filled with the usual cliches and dodgy plot development.

To many parts of the story were glossed over and rushed. For example the recent murders don't seem to be the focus of the investigation, in fact they happen and that's that. The Major Investigation Team focus solely on historic deaths, completely missing the point of potential threat, risk or harm whilst the recent killer is out and about.

I didn't get the feeling that any form of investigation or story development was occurring. Just the DCI using gut instant and a crystal ball to solve major crimes as a "lone wolf".

The book is very female driven, pretty much every female character is strong, independent and better than their male counter parts. In this I don't have an issue except when it skews the story and creates an awkward balance.

The final few chapters were almost laughable, evidence just suddenly found in the most obscure places and the parallel investigations did not weave or interconnect.

Without going into massive detail about the plot and spoiling the story. My overall opinion is it was a rushed book, loose ends were speedily tired up and to many cliched characters that I could not feel any connection or empathy for.

(Don't get me started on the lack of Police accuracies - that would fill a whole volume of another book ;). )

I did think the narrator was a bit off with the accents, but as the story progressed I really enjoyed it

Good story, terrible narration

The plot, characters, and setting are all quite engaging, but quite spoiled by the awful narration. Truly terrible and I am glad to see the narrator is different from book 3 in the series - I am going to skip book 2 and avoid further frustration due to the weird phrasing and odd emphases of the narrator that marred this one.
