Summary

The best-selling author of With Our Blessing and Beneath the Surface.

The inspector frowned and examined the earth under the trees. As he scanned the glade, his stomach lurched. One, two, three, four. Five, counting the mound of earth disturbed under the tent. Somebody had cleared the earth of its natural layer and sown their own flowers. In five places. Five graves.

A young woman, Fiona Holland, has gone missing from a small Irish village. A search is mounted, but there are whispers. Fiona had a wild reputation. Was she abducted, or has she run away? A week later a gruesome discovery is made in the woods at Ireland's most scenic beauty spot - the valley of Glendalough.

The bodies are all young women who disappeared in recent years. DI Tom Reynolds and his team are faced with the toughest case of their careers - a serial killer who hunts vulnerable women and holds his victims captive before he ends their lives. Soon the race is on to find Fiona Holland before it's too late.

Loved it but...

I do love Jo Spains books and think she is a great talent. I still love the characters and the plot lines except for the introduction of his new boss... the theme of a great detective working for a hostlie boss is so old and 80% of writers in this genre include one which makes it tedious and unimaginative, so for Jo to follow trudging in these overused footsteps was very disappointing. On the plus side the return of the brilliant Aoife McMahon as narrator was a HUGE relief.

So glad to have discovered this author. I am really enjoying her characters and plots, do hope she writes more in this series. Also excellent narration, highly recommend.

A 21st century whodunit

As a fan of crime fiction, I often struggle to find books that aren't also casually misogynistic/homophobic /racist.
It was so nice to find a story (and I'll be checking out the rest of the series) that doesn't just avoid these tedious tropes but also acknowledges that the moralistic judgements of those kinds of books are actually factors in these types of crime.
This isn't just another 'dead woman is the excuse for a man's genius to shine' story and it's definitely not a 'she had it coming, really' story!
Refreshing, well written, good plot, good characters and particularly the victims are characterised too!

Strong storyline

Jo Spain tells a good story! Great characteristic, a plot that is well supported and unusuak with plenty of suspects.. Only negative comment is that the narration isn't as good as our could be though Aoife is a huge improvement in three narrator of book 2!

great story great narrator!

As with all Jo Spain's books I loved it. The narrator captured the accents of the characters brilliantly which makes them come to life.

Brilliant!

This is another amazing book from Jo Spain. It kept me gripped from beginning to end. Aoife McMahon’s narration is superb. You genuinely feel like you are listening to different people. I feel like I know Tom and the rest of the team. Can’t wait to listen to the next book in the series.
