Summary

The 1989 Ironman World Championship was the greatest race ever in endurance sports. In a spectacular duel that became known as the Iron War, the world's two strongest athletes raced side by side at world-record pace for a grueling 139 miles.

Driven by one of the fiercest rivalries in triathlon, Dave Scott and Mark Allen raced shoulder to shoulder through Ironman’s 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike race, and 26.2-mile marathon. After 8 punishing hours, both men would demolish the previous record - and cross the finish line a mere 58 seconds apart.

In his new book, Iron War, sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald writes a riveting epic about how Allen and Scott drove themselves and each other through the most awe-inspiring race in sports history. Iron War goes beyond the pulse-pounding race story to offer a fascinating exploration of the lives of the world’s two toughest men and their unquenchable desire to succeed.

Weaving an examination of mental resolve into a gripping tale of athletic adventure, Iron War is a soaring narrative of two champions and the paths that led to their stunning final showdown.

Amazing story - awful narration

This is a brilliant book. Really well told and brings a truly epic contest to life with just the right amount of back story. Definitely not just for triathletes. The narration is probably the worst I've heard in probably 100 audio books. It says something about how good the story is that I was able to finish it despite this.

Irritating narration

Having listened to A Life Without Limits which mentions the 'Iron War' between Dave Scott and Mark Allen I was looking forward to hearing their story. I am less than 5 minutes in and the overly precise, forced pronounciation of each and every word will turn listening to this into an endurance event in itself.

I still want to know what happened in the Iron War but I'll have to buy the actual book.

Incredible story of the race and so much more

I'm a triathlete so perhaps this story has huge natural appeal to me but I can strongly recommend it to anyone who is serious about sport and to anyone looking for inspiration for any goals in their life. The book covers so much more than a race; it covers lives, psychology, sports science and a touch of spiritualism. The narration is clear and somehow atmospheric. Matt's books are broad in their appeal and serve, for me at least, as a source of motivation and inspiration for what I could achieve. I highly recommend this book.

A brilliant edge of your seat listen.....

How could someone make a book about two guys racing a triathlon interesting?

Go into the minds of each individual, enable the reader to feel them and all their raw energy and bring to light to dedication and grit needed to perform the extraordinary. Coming at it from two very different approaches by two men who could not be more different, well written and clearly expressed all the way. If this doesn't get you wanting more time to listen to audio books, nothing will.

Brilliant book.

Excellent

I have paper copy of this book & it’s a fantastic, edge of the seat expose into the psyche of 2 legends of the Ironman world. The suspense & dramatical nature of the event & the way the reader tells it is superb. Recommend to all

Iron Grip

it is a broader and more engaging story than just the title suggests (well it is 13 hours) and I enjoyed the journey but the narrator's voice didn't work for me.

Brilliant Story, struggled with the narration

Great book and a fantastic story but the narration was a struggle. The over accentuation was very grating. Definitely worth a listen if you have any interest in Triathlon and Ironman specifically.

Enjoyed

The narration really took some getting use to, almost returned the audio book because of his strange accent and over annunciation. However, very glad I pushed through because the story is amazing! Feeling very inspired and impacted.
