Summary
Tracing the thrilling chain of events that leads up to the Republic's current chaotic state, Cloak of Deception follows Chancellor Valorum as he struggles with his fall from power- and the dark forces who have benefitted greatly from his weakened position.
Hoping to stem the growing tide of unrest, Valorum convenes an emergency trade summit on the planet Eriadu. At his request, a group of Jedi Knights is sent to protect the delegates from possible terrorist attack. But what should have been a simple peacekeeping assignment turns out to be a mission into the heart of a political firestorm.
For shadowy forces are at work, pulling the strings in a masterful bid for power that could leave the Republic reeling. And the Chancellor is only its most visible victim. One man's fall from power could lead to the end of the Republic, and the irreversible rise of the dark side.

Good insight into the political mire surrounding the Chancellor.
Palpatine's manipulation of the senate is intriguing to hear. The Jedi by comparison appear weak.

I hesitate to compare apples with oranges; but ...
I seem to prefer the unabridged audiobooks rather than those that are abridged. With that mentioned, it was difficult to get a feel for the politicking because the narrator's voice seemed similar for all characters. Again: Abridgement; but I think the final edition lacked sufficient pauses in speech for effect and contemplation. There was action from the start; yet somehow, the book seemed to lack drama: Perhaps due to characters not being "internally described or introduced". Again: Abridgement.
I also feel that an opportunity to fill in some details in regards to Qui-Gon's and Obi-Wan's past was missed. Take "Master and Apprentice" for example ... Even Dooku's past was woven into that involving book. Again: Abridgement. This review was entered after my second listen. Darth Plagueus was alive during this period, as was Count Dooku. Qui-Gon's romance in the past was not expanded upon or introduced here. I feel opportunities were missed. I am sorry for the review; but should be honest.
I must note after my third listening to the book, how well it fits in between Darth Plagueus and the Phantom Menace.
My own books are "Predictions 2022" or "Apocalypse 2021 to 2025" by John Harrison in the "Codex of the Eschaton" series. I love other James Luceno work ... James or fans of this abridged book of his: Feel free to bust my balls on my own titles listed above 0:)
