Summary

Following the hypnosis of a violently disturbed psychiatric patient, Ruby Dean, an unholy dark force was unleashed on the medical staff who tried to help her. Now only one of the original team remains - Ward Sister, Becky. Despite her fiancé, D.I. Ross, being unconscious and many of her colleagues either dead or critically ill, Becky is determined to rescue Ruby's 12-year-old daughter from a similar fate to that of her mother.

But no one asking questions in the desolate mining village Ruby descends from ever comes to a good end. And as the diabolical history of the area is gradually revealed, it seems the evil invoked is now both real and contagious.

Don't turn the lights out yet!

Perfect Horror Series!

I pre-ordered this second book from the series as soon as I finished the first 'Father of Lies' and haven't been disappointed!

Terrifying from the get go it was as much a hook as the first book in the series for me.

My idea of a true horror story is one in which I can believe. I am a believer of this type of occult, bump in the night frightmare and have devoured both first and second acts and cannot wait to see what the third brings.

Excellent story, well read. BOOM!

Dialect coaching required

Great story but was distracted by the appalling ‘Yorkshire’ accents.
Please give the narrator dialect lessons.

Appalling narration.

I have no idea, sadly, if the story itself is any good, because Henrietta Meire totally destroys it with her comedy regional accents which seem to be based on episodes of "The Fast Show" from the early 90s (which she often forgets she's supposed to be doing half-way through a sentence), and her inability to read aloud in anything like an engaging manner, sounding by turns bland, toneless and unaware of the context. It sounds like she's reading an instruction book to someone assembling an Ikea wardrobe in an adjoining room. Other than that, brilliant!

Great story with good narration

Liked the characterisation - they were realistic and consistent and contributed to the believability of the storyline

Brilliant!!

I enjoyed the first book in this series but found I didn't want to put this one down, even if I didn't want to listen to it before going to sleep !!!

Great story!

Narrator performance would have been SO much better without the terrible attempt at accents !
The story is great and characters likeable, with plenty of twists and suspense.

Try James Herbert instead.

I tried, I really did. But this woman is the worst narrator in the known universe and I couldn’t sit through another 7 hours of her, and then a third book. She’s just torment on my ears. Talks so damn fast it’s infuriating, and her accents are beyond dreadful. She also sounds like she’s reading aloud in front off the class and just wants to get it over, rather than sounding like she gives a damn about the story. So I’m returning it after less than an hour (I slogged through the first book and I’m not sure why).

The storyline of this trilogy is ok but it’s absolutely nothing original. If you’re looking for somewhat trashy horror featuring devil worship and ghosts, I strongly urge you to try James Herbert instead. The books he wrote (between 1974 and 2012 so some may seem a little dated but they still work) deal with similar subjects (and lots more) but are infinitely better written, much scarier, and the audio versions all have proper narrators who know how to read, pace themselves, and do accents that don’t make your ears want to curl up and die.

That’s just my advice. The only good thing about this book is that it was free, and even then I feel somehow like it cost me too much. Must be the headache.

brilliant

This series just keeps getting better. It's got the right amount of terror and scares whilst moving the story along. We get more insight into the occult practices and more background into our characters and their secrets. It's a gripping read perfect for those who love all things occult, witchcraft and demons.

Could have been Fantastic but..

The narrator put me off listening because of the terrible Yorkshire accent! Story line brilliant but couldn't listen to that wining accent anymore
