I wish I had written this.........

Would you listen to The Book of Lost Things again? Why?

I have not finished listening yet because for a change I dont want the experience to end.
The story is gripping and grim, the narration is enthralling as is the story in every sense. Its brutal and kind like all good fairy stories should be.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The 7 dwarves

Which character – as performed by Nick Rawlinson – was your favourite?

snow white

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

made me shiver

Any additional comments?

soon I will have to sit and listen to the end but am putting it off till its dark and cold once again

Who chooses the readers?

The book is really very good - worth at least 4 stars. The problem is the reader, he was awful.

A beautifully read and transfixing tale

This wonderful book takes a series of fairy tales, turns them on their heads and builds them into a marvellous story following the journey of one boy to manhood. It is a story tellers dream and Nick Rawlinson is the ultimate one to tell it. His narration is outstanding, and one of the best I have heard. The emotion and life that he brings to the book is superb.

The twist in the fairy tales that David (the boy) encounters is at times hilarious, and at other times frightening and gory. The story weaves beautifully from one to another and whilst the culmination is inevitable, there is no loss in the telling of it.

Wonderfully written. Superbly read.

Sleepy

What would have made The Book of Lost Things better?

A different narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The long, laborious, unnecessary pauses for "dramatic" effect put me right off and made me impatient with the narrator. I found myself falling asleep.

What character would you cut from The Book of Lost Things?

none

Very well written but not my thing

It took me a while to get into this book. The beginning is very slow and there isn't an ounce of happiness or charisma in it. It is not actually a very happy book at all but once it gets into its stride- around the entrance of the dwarfs in my opinion- it takes on a lyrical charm and charisma. Albeit with some very dark, very very dark at times, subjects wrapped up in a brothers grimm style story. The narrator was perfect casting for this book. I read a review based on the narration which nearly put me off. I am pleased to say they were wrong. The narrator has superb skill and has a tonal quality which suits this story to the tea. He added to the whole experience. You just have to get past the beginning.

Loved it

it took a while to get into the juicy hit of the story, but the pre context was needed.
This was the first John Connolly book I read a very long time ago, and I enjoyed it even more this time around. He is my favourite author .
The narrator was spot on and the story was captivating.

Narrator was incredible

Not usually my cup of tea but gave it a chance as I’d heard about it. I think I enjoyed this book most by how the narrator brought it so alive. Incredible job. Best narration I’v come across so far on audible

Great dark fairytale

A very good story although I felt that the narrator left to many long dramatic pauses so I listen to it at 1.10 speed and that fixed it.

Not a fairy story, fantastic though.

Although this story features a young boy as it’s main protagonist it is not a child’s tale. It starts with building his “normal” life and that is uncomfortable as he struggles with the loss of his mother, the war and his father’s new companion.
As the tale proceeds there instances of antiquated attitudes to same sex relationships but these are shown in a negative light and I think that the same sex relationship in the story is handled beautifully. There is no carnality or explicit behaviour described.
There are also references to exploitation of children, although as a child the character David does not understand the full implications.
Later in the narrative are elements of terror and horror. But it is handled well with a convincing level of fear and peril and balanced with humour and affection.
The narration is measured and clear. Accents to differentiate characters are used well. Other reviews found them inappropriate, but if taken as representing how a child would imagine the character to speak I think that they work well.

A well written book with twists and turns.

I really enjoyed this book.
Not particularly intellectually challenging more challenging to one’s imagination. Book to listen to when you want to relax.
Enjoy.
