Summary
In the hellish sprawl of Imperial Terra, Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Erasmus Crowl serves as a stalwart and vigilant protector, for even the Throneworld is not immune to the predations of its enemies. In the course of his Emperor-sworn duty, Crowl becomes embroiled in a dark conspiracy, one that leads all the way to the halls of the Imperial Palace.
As he plunges deeper into the shadowy underbelly of the many palace districts, his investigation attracts the attention of hidden forces, and soon he and his acolyte Spinoza are being hunted - by heretics, xenos, servants of the Dark Powers, or perhaps even rival elements of the Inquisition itself. Soon they discover a terrible truth, one that if allowed to get out could undermine the very fabric of the Imperium itself.

Interesting story, with a really solid narrator
The book itself has a pretty slow pace, with some parts being needlessly slow and ponderous. That said; it contains good, interesting characters who are not obnoxious (a rare thing these days), and well-written depictions of the world, people and society they live in. There is action, but the bulk of the book is about people and interactions between them (which I really like).
The book is not perfect, and the pace/tempo is at times off, so that one can pay attention for a long time without anything really happening, for then something very important to occur during one short line of text.
Still, all in all, this book is more than worth the price, and I have listened to it multiple times. The narrator/VA does a great job with both the narration and the voices of the different characters, who are clearly defined, and easy to recognize as belonging to this or that person. He elevates the material, and really brings it to life.

Chris Wraight does it again!
Chris Wraight writes another fantastic warhammer novel set on terra. John Banks gives another flawless performance narrating this book. I highly recommend this.

I really like the story, it gives a glimpse of Terra in the 41st Millennium. The reader was brilliant.

One of the good ones.
You fallow an inquisitor, in what is more or less a detective role. Trying to unravel what plots are brewing on tera.
What I liked the most about this book is how you see a good slice of society on tera as you fallow the inquisitor in a fairly good story.
I will mention that this is not your typical military focused "big and brawling alpha action hero" 40k book. So if you want that, there are better options.
I will read the next.

All around a solid and enjoyable book.
It's an enjoyable book. Interesting to hear about life (and death) on the throne world. Inquisatorial intreague and detective work is always fun.

One of my favourite 40k books
A fun mystery from start to finish but the stand out is how the planet terra itself is almost a character more than a setting.
i would recommend for anyone who likes inquisition stories more than pure action.

For the emperor
Im a long time warhammer fan and worked my way through many books, being new to audio books i was sceptical thinking i would not enjoy it as much! I stand corrected!
