Summary

An eerie and compelling ghost story set on the dark wilds of the Yorkshire moors. For fans of The Witchfinder's Sister, The Silent Companions and Susan Hill, this Gothic tale will weave its way into your imagination and chill you to the bone.

Maybe you've heard tales about Scarcross Hall, the house on the old coffin path that winds from village to moor top. They say there's something up here, something evil.

Mercy Booth isn't afraid. The moors and Scarcross are her home and lifeblood. But beneath her certainty, small things are beginning to trouble her. Three ancient coins missing from her father's study, the shadowy figure out by the gatepost, an unshakable sense that someone is watching.

When a stranger appears seeking work, Mercy reluctantly takes him in. As their stories entwine, this man will change everything. She just can't see it yet.

Beautifully written

The story is interesting, although some of the themes I've come across in other stories. The writing is eloquent and flows along. Performance is perfect. The story does drag a little at times, for example, too much about sheep farming! The story doesn’t pick up until about halfway and repeats quite a bit - sounds in the house that don't come to much and descriptions of the moor is in many chapters. Despite this (and going on the jacket reviews, some might not mind that) it was an enjoyable read, picking up pace towards the end.

Chilling!

Well performed and engaging, this story paints a bleak and harsh landscape filled with similar characters. The ending was perfect.

Different to what I imagined

I was a bit perplexed with the end of the story, it just seemed everything was rushed at the end, where the story itself, was done at a much slower pace, a bit disappointed with the ending

Chilling

A fascinating, chiller, beautifully performed. Evokes the fear of the times in wave after wave of prosaic, vivid details about the ordinary lives of people in a cursed landscape.

Miserable

One or the most miserable stories I have read. Boring in parts and could skip bits without ruining the story. The narration was good. A depressing read

Disappointing

Narrator is excellent, book ok took a while to work out what century it was in. it was ok in that I kept going it should have been great and could have been great but just missed the mark.

I stuck with it to the end only really because I was well maybe it will get better and I want all these vague hints to come together which they do ish at the end but literally finished thinking nice historical novel, about as scary as a chocolate teapot, dragged out for limp ending.

An interesting story with lots of historical interest throughout. I enjoyed the narrator’s voice. Would recommend!

Excellent, and extremely well read!

Not my usual sort of book and concerned about it being a ghost story. However, not frightened by it. Thought the plot extremely good and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very different for me.

Liked it but didn't love it

I liked the premise but it was a little slow, and stop-start for me as an audio book. Could be my fault... Perhaps best to listen in just one or two sittings. I didn't find the characters endearing or to be in enough peril for me to be scared by the scary bits which, to me, still felt poorly explained even at the end. It was well written and narrated, just didn't grab me.
