Summary
The first novel in Julia Quinn's worldwide best-selling Bridgerton novels, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix. This is the story of Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke: welcome to the ballrooms of Regency London.....
Can there be any greater challenge to London's Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke? Lady Whistledown's Society Papers, April 1813.
By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend's sister, the lovely - and almost-on-the-shelf - Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth - it's all an elaborate plan to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable....
Their ruse works like a charm - at first. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it's hard to remember that their courtship is a complete sham. Maybe it's his devilish smile, certainly it's the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her. It wasn't the plan, but it seems she's falling for the duke, for real. And amidst the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London's elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule....

"Light, pacy and full of feisty heroines." (Guardian on the Bridgerton series)
"Quinn is a master of historical romance." (Entertainment Weekly)

Americanised Heyer
Enjoyable and well narrated. And an interesting take on a disability which is in the public eye.

Netflix did better 👏🏼
So I started this book thinking I want to read all of them BUT I didn’t really like, it was very detailed (sorry) . So now I’m not sure if it’s really worth it to read the rest????

Movie definitely better than the book
Sadly, I find that I am not as enamored with the Bridgerton books as I am with the television series. Pity. After loving Johanna Lindsay's books for so long, and having read all her books, I thought I would give Julia Quinn a try. Suffice it to say that Lindsay's books are still way better and more engrossing.
But it seems that done in Shonda Rhimes style, the Bridgerton series is quite riveting and sexy.

As good as the show??
I really did enjoy this audiobook . Having already watched the series , I had really big expectations, it being one of my all time favourite series ever ! ( and that's saying something) . But I went into the audiobook pretty much expecting it too be better , as in my opinion the books normally are .
However I found myself craving more in some parts. Where the dramatics had clearly been amped up in the show , I found myself missing those moments of passion. The hidden love element in the relationship between Simon and Daphne wasn't really there and that's my favourite part . I also think I was more drawn the to the series due to the mix in characters stories . Although maybe I should read the other books in the series before passing judgement ....
I understand though that this isn't all about a comparison of the two and as a standalone if I hadnt see the series , I would consider this a 5 stars ! . I do love the story and the audio performance itself was definitely a 10/10 . Rosalyn Landor could not have been more.of a perfect fit . She nailed the tone of the different characters perfectly, and she would definitely give Julie Andrews a run for her money with the character of Lady Whistledown .
So overall I give 4 stars . As much as I loved it on its own, I just can't help my love of dynamics the show brings .

Nice but the Netflix series is better!
I enjoyed the book and the narration was okay! Can't help comparing to the Netflix series and fir a change I definitely think the series is better. The series doesn't follow the book, and I guess that is what I like. It simply makes it a better story. And listening to the "second" epilog I already know some of what (probably) will happen in the coming series.... Not sure I should have listened to it in hindsight.

I came after the show but really enjoyed this. Very well read from the actors. The story is what it is, you know what you’re getting into…
