Summary
Eleven-year-old Slim Hannigan and her family left their home in Ireland to travel to America - in search of a better life. It has been so long and such a journey that Slim Hannigan and the rest of her family can't even imagine what home looks like anymore. And there are many, many miles across America for them to travel before they reach their destination.
Between them and the home of their uncle lie thousands of miles of dangerous land, wild animals and strangers who do not wish them well. Slim has to draw on bravery like she's never known to keep her family together and to keep them moving forward.

Enlightening and heart warming
I really enjoyed the mixtures of ups and downs in t this second book following Slim and her family across the USA. As an inspiring cowboy Slim is a girl after my own heart and steps up to protect and support her friends and family including the native Americans

Exhaustion and determination of an Irish family
Really enjoyed this story, although at times , it seemed the narrator rushed and didnt pause for breath long enough over certain points, to allowing the listener to digest the information. It seemed very factual, and well written, and I am looking forward to the next book, as I need to know how it ends.

Very emotionally charged
A fine continuation of the story started in 'A Slice of the Moon', I am so drawn in to the story and have grown to be friends with this lovely Irish family. I really do find their troubles to be harrowing and I have found occasions when I have to push myself into continuing to read.
Sandi Toksvig has an amazing way of presenting a story, she has obviously researched this topic thoroughly, i.e. The Potato blight and the plight of the poor Irish workers.
Amazing story, beautifully told.
