Summary

In a rash of carjackings, Newark becomes newsworthy when one such theft ends in the murder of a wealthy banking executive. The affable, wisecracking Ross is assigned the story. To balance his reporting, he finds a Nigerian immigrant of more modest means who was also killed during a recent carjacking. It turns out the two victims knew each other, sharing an unexplained round of golf at a country club shortly before their deaths. When his unborn child is put in harm's way, it becomes more than just a story for Carter. And he'll stop at nothing to rescue the baby - even if it costs him his own life.

A delightful mix of suspense, humor, and sarcasm!

Book 6 in the investigative reporter Carter Ross series by Brad Parks lives up to expectations. What would you do to protect the life of your unborn full-term child? The first chapter of the novel, four minutes in length, sets up the novel perfectly. The plot is about carjackings accompanied by murder of the cars' owners/drivers, but the novel is more about the importance of the life of the child. Carter's boss Tina Thompson is managing editor for local news with the newspaper. Though unmarried, Tina and Carter are expecting their first child as the 39th week of the pregnancy is fast approaching. Sweet Thing, no longer an intern with the newspaper, again plays a significant part in the novel. Narration is excellent.

My thanks to Audible listener Shelley of Raleigh NC whose reviews have alerted me to this series and to more than a dozen others. If you are a fan of the mystery/thriller genre, you should be following her. On the Listener Page reviewers by category under Mysteries and Thrillers her name appears first for good reason. I encourage all fans of the mystery/thriller genre to follow her and to reward her excellent reviews with helpful votes. (I have never met or communicated with Shelley.)

EXCELLENT SERIES!!!!

Pacifist Carter Ross learns that sometimes you have to get aggressive. How far would you go to save your child? This is a lesson Ross learns in a mater of minutes.
While investigating a a couple of car jackings Carter stumbles on to the person running the thefts but doesn't know he has. He gets his facts wrong a few times before he realized exactly what's going on and just how close he is.
This is a very good book. The suspense is great and so is the sarcasm.
Adam Verner does an excellent job narrating.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this entire series.
