Summary

The military SF sequel to his extraordinary Old Man's War, John Scalzi's The Ghost Brigades is the second in The Old Man's War series.

Who can you trust, if you can't trust yourself?

Three hostile alien races have united against humanity, determined to halt our expansion into space. The mastermind behind this lethal alliance is a traitor Charles Boutin. He was a Colonial Defence Force scientist, with access to their biggest military secrets. Now the CDF's only hope is to discover Boutin's plan. Trouble is, Boutin's dead.

As a super soldier created from Boutin's own DNA, Jared Dirac may have answers. However, when Dirac fails to access the scientist's memories, he's transferred to the Ghost Brigades for training. These elite troops are also cloned from the dead, so he might fit in. But will Dirac's memory return as the enemy plots the fate of humankind? And whose side is Dirac really on?

Continue the gripping space war series with The Last Colony.

Not as good as the first book

Really wanted this book to be as good as the first one, unfortunately I found the human interest and humour of the first book, lacking.
Often I would zone out when trying to listen.
Lot's of explanation about alien races and tec but I'm afraid it left me cold.
Not planning on getting the third book.

A nice sequal to Old Man's War.

The story follows Jane and her Ghost Brigade, and the addition of a new squad member who was created from the mind of a traitor.

too many he said she said but great story,

the performance is great but there is no need to say who said what if there are voices he is doing for each character

Nice continuation

This does exactly what a good sequel should. It depends and expands the world, and introduces some interesting new characters and settings.

At first I found it a little jarring to leave the characters of the first book behind, but the new story fits well with the last and is good to see things from another perspective.

Definitely more starship troopers this time...

Enjoyable contraction of the saga!

I liked the first book. And enjoyed hearing more of the story arc. The “he said” “she said” complaint from some reviewers is easily ignored. It’s just a good story if you like sci-fi with a little humanity. There are funny even absurd and sometimes sad moments that all add to the enjoyment. I listen to escape and that’s exactly what this book and series is doing. I will continue and enjoy the characters that continue as well as the new ones. The narrator has a pleasant and enjoyable voice. And he changes sufficiently for different characters, male and female and even a child, to give realism to the tale. The story is narrower in this book than the first which is why gave it 4 not 5 stars as it’s more of a filler than the opening epic of the first book. But it’s still enjoyable stand alone or as part of the series.
