Summary

True honour is endless. Join us. Norfolk, 1935.

War is looming in Great Britain, and the sprawling country estate of Alderberen Hall is shadowed by suspicion and paranoia. Thirteen-year-old Delphine Venner is determined to uncover the secrets of the hall's elite society, which has taken in her gullible mother and unstable father.

As she explores the house and discovers the secret network of hidden passages that thread through the estate, Delphine uncovers a world more dark and threatening than she ever imagined. With the help of head gamekeeper Mr. Garforth, Delphine must learn the bloody lessons of war and find the soldier within herself in time to battle the deadly forces amassing in the woods....

The Honours is a dark, glittering and dangerously unpauseable novel which invites you to enter a thrilling and fantastical world unlike any other.

One of the fantasy fans.

Would you try another book written by Tim Clare or narrated by Julie Teal?

No I would not try another audiobook by Tim Clare - although one might say it was a laudable first effort. I think the book needs work on its structure - it's too long and the action is rather difficult to follow.

What was most disappointing about Tim Clare’s story?

The story begins very well and you think you are about to listen to a thriller set in the 1930s. The story then drags somewhat until the middle when the “fantasy” part of the book takes over. Without giving anything away - the story builds (as thrillers will) to a dramatic conclusion - but I’m somewhat mystified as to what exactly happens - and then stops.

Did Julie Teal do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Yes she did, but she's not my favourite. I have listened to her readings of the Maisie Dobbs series. While with those books I would prefer another reader, but got used to her voice, in this book she began to get on my nerves.

Could you see The Honours being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I'm sure the author would like that to be the case - I would say it was targeted at a teen audience - with a lot of special effects.

Any additional comments?

Perhaps it's just a question of taste because many have enjoyed this book - if you like fantasy you may like it quite a lot.

I don't know how to describe this but it's AMAZING

Any additional comments?

I'm not sure I can do this justice. On a very basic level it's an adventure story set in the 1930s about a child uncovering a mystery in a country house. Delphine is an extraordinary heroine - a lonely, brave, confused, resourceful and troubled child who mainly wants to save her father who suffers from PTSD. Beyond that, it's difficult not to give anything away. It's exciting and unexpected at every turn. I really like Tim Clare's style of writing; I was totally caught up in the world he creates.

Julie Teal does a good job keeping the characters distinct. I think her voice for Delphine is particularly good.

I'm aware I'm not being particularly helpful so just give it a listen and make up your own mind. I will say this, there's a scene where the honours of the title are explained and it's horrific but fascinating.

Unexpected

Found the second half gripping, interested by the historical details, mildly irritated by the the narrator's inflection. Like like

What a weird story

Not sure whether this is my cup of tea. The story is both written and narrated well but when it went from a quaint who-dunnit to fighting visperi and Minotaurs and bubbling pools of goo - I took a mental double-take!

Will probably try and read the text version

Keen to read/listen to this but upward intonation at end of each sentence made unlistenable.
