Summary
How do you confront your husband when you don't want to know the truth?
Twenty years ago Dennis Danson was arrested and imprisoned for the brutal murder of a young girl in Florida's Red River County. Now he's the subject of a true-crime documentary that's whipping up a frenzy online to uncover the truth and free a man who has been wrongly convicted.
A thousand miles away in England, Samantha is obsessed with Dennis' case. She exchanges letters with him and is quickly won over by his apparent charm and kindness to her. Soon she has left her old life behind to marry him and campaign for his release.
But when the campaign is successful and Dennis is freed, Sam begins to discover new details that suggest he may not be quite so innocent after all....

Implodes With The Central Character
An interesting idea for sure but never really quite executes against it. When you base a book around a very weak central character you are always taking a risk. Readers, at least those like myself, need to be able to identify with them in some way but Sam just fell flat in almost every way and I simply couldn't identify with her. I only made it halfway through but by then I just couldn't feel anything about her. She was weak in a two dimensional way which brought the whole thing crashing down.
Christina Cole and Lorelei King did a decent job of the narration and the book is well-structured for two narrators but even that doesn't lift this beyond the mundane.

Fantastic Original Book
I really enjoyed this book it was totally original. The premise of the story was intriguing, what makes an ordinary British woman fall in love with an American murderer on death row? The way in which this question was dealt with had me gripped from page one and I could barely stop until it was finished. The narration was really good and Christina really conveyed Samantha. The ending was excellent tense and nerve shattering with a final twist. My only criticism would be that I would have liked the portrait of Samantha to have been drawn out a bit more. The press described her in a certain way, but this was never confirmed by Amy Lloyd in her narrative and I felt that I really wanted to know what she actually looked like and if this had any bearing on her actions. Overall a brilliant book.

Wow! This held my attention!
I wasn’t sure that I would enjoy this in the early chapters, but when it got going I could hardly bear to put it down. The writing draws the listener into the heavy, humidity and isolation of rural Florida. The tension is palpable and the characters well drawn. There were a couple of sloppy errors. e.g. ‘he changed into a clean, striped shirt . . . she pressed her face into his white shirt’. However, these were momentary distractions and not enough to detract from the rating if this powerful book.

Good until the end
Really enjoyed this book. Different and intriguing and it kept me interested.
However as with a lot of books these days the ending was poor.
Still worth a listen.

Utter drivel
If you like your crime drama to be completely detached from reality and lacking any form of basic research then this is the book for you. I’m prepared to suspend a certain amount of disbelief however this just asks too much. For example - a neglected child from a destitute and abusive background enters the American prison system as a teenager and leaves 20 years later as a clean eating food snob demanding avocados and quinoa? How did this service the plot in any way? Just utter nonsense. How it won an award is beyond me.

Different
This book was different to the usual books that I read or listen to. It was slow to get into at first But then the story got interesting and you start to get involved in the story deeper. A different style of book to the usual. The book ended leaving you asking questions.

I thought I'd love this book, but I didn't
I really wanted to love this story but it didn't grab me like it should have. the characters and story were lackluster and I found myself struggling through as it didn't keep my interest. gutted as it was my holiday book

Rather Predictable
Sadly I was disappointed with this book. Great promise but over padded and predictable with a sloppy ending with left me shaking my head. The narration was great though and the idea of the book excellent. It just fails to deliver for me.
