Summary

Alison Weir was already one of Britain's most popular historians when she wrote her first novel, Innocent Traitor, which hit the Sunday Times bestseller list to a chorus of praise.

Now, in her second novel, Alison Weir goes to the heart of Tudor England at its most dangerous and faction-riven in telling the story of Elizabeth I before she became queen. The towering capricious figure of Henry VIII dominates her childhood, but others play powerful roles: Mary, first a loving sister, then as queen a lethal threat; Edward, the rigid and sad little King; Thomas Seymour, the Lord High Admiral, whose ambitions, both political and sexual, are unbridled. And, an ever-present ghost, the enigmatic, seductive figure of her mother Anne Boleyn, executed by Henry, whose story Elizabeth must unravel.

Elizabeth learns early that the adult world contains many threats that have to be negotiated if she is to keep her heart and her head.

Okay

The story was okay, not the best to be honest and the narration was dull

Excellent

Very evocative of the period with the characters sympathetically treated, and the great narration helps

Very good book, some problems with the audiobook

thoroughly enjoyed the story but some pauses in text weren’t long enough so to the listener it wasn’t clear that we were in a new scene

Deeply disappointing

Alison Weir is a fine historian and her first venture into historical fiction was about Lady Jane Grey and was splendid. I have listened to it twice. So I was excited to learn of this new venture. However, it is extremely disappointing, perhaps because we know quite a lot about Elizabeth and less about Jane. But the Jane book gave a far more personalised picture; this is just the usual historical background with dialogue. Reasonably well read.

Absolutely loved this story and Alison Weir’s writing is so evocative and splendid. This story of Elizabeth and her relationships was informative as well as enthralling

Abridged

I absolutely love the story. However, Audible does not state this as a reading of the abridged version. I have ADHD and bought both the physical book and the audible version for my class on literary adaptations of the Tudor history. My goal was to read and listen simultaneously, but the recording is abridged... Such a let down.

Fleshes out QE1's journey from child to regent

Alison Weir brings to the fore Elizabeth's emotional journey from child to regent. I had not quite understood her relationships with her father, Henry VII, and half-sister, Mary. Weir scythes through the characters and events to render just those essential to the telling of Elisabeth's story.
Audible stands or falls on the quality of its narrators; Emma Fielding is one of the most accomplished. Her vocal identification of each character lends a deeper understanding of them. There's nuance in her performance of character dialogue which deepens our understanding of their thinking. This creates a perfect symbiosis between author and narrator! Recommended!
