Editor reviews

Noah Michael Levine delivers a powerful performance of Gaeton Fonzi’s magnificent nonfiction work The Last Investigation: A Former Federal Investigator Reveals the Conspiracy to Kill JFK. His melodious voice is a perfect complement to the powerful story. Fonzi, a journalist who was an investigator for the House Select Committee on Assassinations, questions the identity of the conspirators who brought forth the president’s death. As well, he reexamines the motives for the crime. What the American government has led us to believe is not the entire truth. Fonzi exposes the lies. This audiobook is considered to be the foremost text on the Kennedy assassination.

Summary

Gaeton Fonzi's masterful retelling of his work investigating the Kennedy assassination for two Congressional committees is required listening for students of the assassination and the subsequent failure of the government to solve the crime. The Last Investigation is a compelling postmortem on the House Select Committee on Assassinations as well as a riveting account of Fonzi's pursuit of leads indicating involvement by officers of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Depressing and illuminating

To those of us of a certain age the assassination of President Kennedy was a never to be unforgettable shock. As soon as it happened I recall rumours abounding that it was a conspiracy. Even to non-experts it seemed impossible that Oswald could have achieved such precisely targeted shots on a moving target. This book is an exhaustive investigation into the numerous investigations that were repeatedly thwarted by political interference or the CIA refusing to cooperate or to positively lie about their involvement. The book chronicles the sheer number of times that the CIA has tried to interfere in other countries, the political colour of which didn't suit the USA, even resorting to assassinating their leaders or at least trying to. Fidel Castro seems to have escaped that fate numerous times!
It's depressing and frightening what government agencies get up to in secret and unanswerable for their actions.

Not a traditional audiobook but worthwhile!

The narrator does a very good job. The book itself is a narrative of recollection by the author. which does include some intrigue and minor revelations. It's easier than reading official reports but (by necessity, I guess) has quite a lot of details that may or may not be of interest to the listener.

A brilliant account of the assassination investigations.

If you are interested in the assassination of President Kennedy and the subsequent investigations, rumours and conspiracy theories associated with it, this is the book to read. This is the most detailed and forthright account I have ever read.

Detailed and thoroughly researched

This long listen is not easy as it becomes more and more intricate and penetrative into the CIA era of the sixties and decades after. I found it convincing and credible. The American people and the world have been blatantly duped about JFK's assassination and how his visions were destroyed by powerful forces from within.

The hunt for the mysterious Maurice Bishop

Federal investigator Gaeton Fonzi gives us the inside story of the HSCA reinvestigation of the JFK assassination. This started out with such great hope and optimism that finally a true and proper enquiry would be carried out. Sadly it was not to be as almost before it began the political squabbles in Congress commenced. Chairman and prosecutors resigned, budgets were cut and the investigation itself was quietly nobbled. Mr Fonzi was responsible for the Mimi end of the enquiry which brought him into contact with many of the key players in the Cuban expat community. We follow the thrilling hunt and exposure of the CIA's mysterious Maurice Bishop subsequently identified as David Atlee Phillips. This is a really great book but some previous knowledge of the JFK assassination is required to get the maximum enjoyment out of the at times fast paced story. Superbly narrated once again by Mr Noah Michael Levine.

Enthralling!

This is book that the author knew the subject well. He was an investigator on the second
Senate investigation into the demise of J F K. It shows the unlawful withholding, purgery and stonewalling by Government departments, especially the Security section.
I recommend a good companion to this theory. 'JFK and the unspeakable', by James Douglas. Although fhey are by different authors, the
evidence becomes more compelling.

The modern day Encylopedia of JFK

I had a keen interest in the JFK subject since reading an all encompassing picture book that had various photos from the day enhanced and digitized i forget the name of the book it belonged to a family member i used to sit as a teenager with my magnifying glass shocked at how the plain day murder of the worlds most powerful man could have been covered up in such a fashion..my conclusion back then still stands and is further enhanced by this great roundup of all the main players and enquirys etc.
even 60 years later there is no denying that various players were involved most notably the anti-castro cubans who viewed JFKs percieved lack of support during the bay of pigs invasion as a traitorous crime punishable by deaths.
i do not believe that the cubans could have attempted such a crime on there own and this is where the more shadowy elements of the intelligence services come into play who at the time were concerened with the kennedy brothers percieved weakness when it came to combating the communist threat .the one theory that does not carry much weight is the mafia connection because they are a notoriously self serving bunch whose main focus is always on making money knowing fine well the assassination of political figures, law enforcement judges etc would have resulted in a massive crackdown and smashing of the mafia which eventually happened with rico in the 80s/90s.
the mafia were obviously concerned about losing havana as a gambling mecca but at the time vegas was replacing cuba as the go-to destination for gambling so i personally dont believe they would have took the chance of being involved in such a high profile murder.
a great listen that details every possible suspect group and there reasons behind disliking JFK.
poor oswald he was the perfect cover man.. the timeframe where he defects to USSR and then is allowed to return no questions asked alludes to the involment of the higher echelons of the US intelligence world

The modern day Encylopedia to all things to all things JFK related
