Summary

Young Mikey Quinn, scavenging on the streets of Hull, is thrown into prison for stealing a rabbit from the butcher. His chief accuser, a well-to-do lawyer, has a daughter, Eleanor, whom he badly mistreats. When Mikey is released he finds that his mother has died and his brothers have been taken into the workhouse - determined to find a better life for his family, he walks all the way to London to seek his fortune.

There, he finds that the grim realities of city life are even worse than they were in Hull, and comes under the evil patronage of the sinister Tully, first encountered when he was in prison. But he also meets Eleanor again, and between them they face the dangers of London and gradually make a new life for themselves. Together they have to face journeying back to Hull - the long walk home.

Easy listening

This was such a pleasure to listen to. The narrator was excellent & cajoled me away with the essence of the story. Another fab book by Val Wood.

very goo book

Any additional comments?

this is the first book I have listened to by Valerie wood and I listened to it every moment I could.
the story of mikey walking and hitching rides to and from London, with a working period of five years in London, was written and performed really well. the poverty of the time and the help people would give not having much more themselves came across.
recommended.

A very good listen!

A heartwarming story of a young lad and young lady, set in what must have been a very hard era, that blossom into 2 happy young lovers. A story depicting their long struggle to acheive there hearts ambitions. A predicatable ending but very well read by the narator Ann Dover. Once I began to listen it was hard to put down.

Revue of a Long Walk Home by Valerie Wood

A really heartfelt story of how the poor came through such hardships in times gone by but through adversity and hard work made successes of their lives

Heartwarming

The characters are so likeable except the ones that are not supposed to be. Tully was very much a Dickensian Fagin type perhaps I'd like to have seen him get his comeuppance but these days, in the world we live in, I'm a sucker for a happy ending. Val Wood rarely disappoints. My only sadness was it ended! 😊
