Summary

Meet the neighbours from hell, in the gripping thriller that reviewers and readers describe as "fast-paced", "chilling", and "impossible to put down".

When Jamie and Kirsty move into their first home together, they are full of optimism. The future, in which they plan to get married and start a family, is bright. The other residents of their building seem friendly too, including the Newtons, a married couple who welcome them to the building with open arms.

But then strange things start to happen. Dead rats are left on their doorstep. They hear disturbing noises, and much worse, in the night. After Jamie's best friend is injured in a horrific accident, Jamie and Kirsty find themselves targeted by a campaign of terror.

As they are driven to the edge of despair, Jamie vows to fight back—but he has no idea what he is really up against....

The Magpies is a gripping psychological thriller in which the monsters are not vampires or demons but the people who live next door. It is a nightmare that could happen to anyone.

A gripping story

A real page turner , excellent portrayal of characters and very sympathetic and gripping story teller . Plot kept me enthralled
right up to final pages and final twist to the story.

A good piece of pulp fiction

What did you like best about The Magpies? What did you like least?

Interesting plot but a few cardboard characters

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

A male author writing about the mind set of female characters didn't. really work

Did Elliot Hill do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Yes he was fine

Was The Magpies worth the listening time?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Interesting plot with a twist at the end

I was a little disappointed...

Would you try another book written by Mark Edwards or narrated by Elliot Hill?

Definitely Edwards, he's one of my favourite authors. Hill?? Possibly.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I don't do spoilers anyway! I work really hard to avoid them! Well, I thought he was an idiot, doing what he did to his loved ones, for a house? So I think it was deserved, if I'm honest. I would have done the same as she did.

What does Elliot Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Voice tone, and suspense. You actually feel like you're listening to it all happen.

Do you think The Magpies needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. I don't think it's one of those that need a sequel, because it all gets tied up in the one book.

Any additional comments?

I didn't think it was that bad at first, I thought they were over reacting to some of the stuff. I can't get my head around Paul later on though. He's very strange. I also thought Jamie was a total moron, an idiot, and unbelievably stupid and sexist. I wanted to shake him. Silly man. I have to be honest, given than this was an Edwards book, I almost expected a little worse than we actually got. Maybe that's just me. Good read though. I have his other books, I'm going to start another very soon.

Not what I expected

I got this book on a whim after scrolling through looking for a new read.
It wasn’t the kind of story I thought it’d be but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I’d recommend it to anyone who would stick with it.
I still have a lot of questions but there are two more books…onto the next one !

The horror of reality!

This was an impulse buy, as I fancied a thriller, a British thriller that would be gritty and engaging.
The magpies didn't disappoint in that aspect.
I became frustrated with the almost stupidity of the protagonist- which is why I awarded this 4 not 5 stars, as in the end, my hopes for him were unfulfilled. But having since read/ listened to more of Mark Edwards novels I realise this is a theme he follows ... perhaps there isn't any gold at the end of rainbow and all there is, is a new start.

Enjoyable 'Easy read' thriller

Have you listened to any of Elliot Hill’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't, but the reader is excellent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes but I would be spoiling the plot for anyone reading this review.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book very much as I was doing some tedious mindless physical work and it kept my thoughts aimed at 'what was going to happen next'. Not a pot boiler by any means, the limited number of characters and situations allowed me to listen without having to keep referring back to earlier chapters. I look forward to another book by this author.
