Summary
While Horus' rebellion burns across the galaxy, a very different kind of war rages beneath the Imperial Palace.
The 'Ten Thousand' Custodian Guard, along with the Sisters of Silence and the Mechanicum forces of Fabricator General Kane, fight to control the nexus points of the ancient eldar webway that lie closest to Terra, infested by daemonic entities after Magnus the Red's intrusion. But with traitor legionaries and corrupted Battle Titans now counted among the forces of Chaos, the noose around the Throneworld is tightening, and none but the Emperor Himself can hope to prevail.

Great book. Answers many of the questions that surround the overall narrative. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great start to WH40K universe
I’m surprised so few people name this particular book as an entry point to WH40K universe. Yes, it’s not chronologically first. Yes, it has some big spoilers. But it shows the most important foundations and reasons for everything else. Great story, in my opinion.

I get the golden men now
Really good story, slow to start in a way but really builds and has lots of lore Easter eggs from the 40k stuff which is nice. I now have a new appreciation for custodes which I didn't expect.

fantastic look into the secret war of the golden
this is a fantastic opportunity to look into the secret war with a glimpse into the fighting forces of the custodians and sisters of silence. Not to mention one of the best insights into the master of mankind himself. Well worth a read if you are a 30/40k fan.

Not bad but was expecting more.
This is probably one of the most anticipated books in the horus heresy series as the character of the Emperor is at once the driving force behind the universe and one of the things we know least about. There I like many people reading this book expected it to heavily focus on the Emperor's past as well his own perspective within he horus heresy. There was some of this but the book mainly focused on the actions of the Custodes and silent sisters after the events of A Thousand Sons. Not a bad read by any means but it just leaves me wanting more and we are unlikely to get another book like it until the very end of the series for the final confrontation between horus and the Emperor.
