Summary

The new masterfully plotted, standalone pyschological thriller from number-one best seller Jonathan Kellerman, featuring tough, brilliant young pyschologist Grace Blades, a former student of Alex Delaware.

A brilliant and dedicated psychologist, Grace Blades has a gift for treating troubled souls and tormented psyches - because she bears her own invisible scars. Only five years old when she watched her parents die in a bloody murder-suicide, Grace took refuge in her fierce intellect and found comfort in the loving couple who adopted her.

But her now-accomplished life has a secret side, ruled by an insatiable desire; by night she pursues the addictive thrills of sexual trysts with strangers. And when her two worlds unexpectedly converge, Grace's past returns with a vengeance, threatening to destroy everything she's fought for - including her life.

Shaken by the murder of her newest patient and fearful that an investigation will expose her double life, Grace sets out to probe the crime herself. But when she stumbles on the dead man's true identity, a horrifying chapter from her childhood is violently reawakened, forcing Grace to confront a decades-old act of evil crying out to be avenged.

Suddenly stalked by dangerous men, Grace must turn to the talent for survival she's depended on all her life in order to face down the darkest personal demon she's ever battled: her own.

Overall OK

I found it difficult to accept that Grace would act as she did in many ways.

The story was ok, certainly worth a listen, but stretching one's imagination and belief

Too slow, too unbelievable

This book started out grabbing my interest. W without giving any plot away, after the murder it really slowed up too much. I almost gave up on it, but it held just enough interest for me to continue. Grace doesn't really have many plus points to her character, and it was stated just too often how brilliant she is. Barely recognisable as the Delaware author

Wow

I was unsure about this book when I started it but should not have worried as I was hooked 5 minutes later. Much as I LOVE Alex D this new story is definitely one of the best books by this author and is the most gripping novel I have listened too this year - bravo!

A good lazy listen

Nicely performed- but felt there were a lot of lose ends. Enjoyed it never the less. Positive female lead for a change

Surprised

I really enjoyed it.
Well read. Good pace.
I don't like reviews that tell me the whole story, so just to say, it was good, not superb but worth a listen. Gentle suspense. Intriguing and therefore it captured my interest.

Superlative narration

Well written and I respected Grace, the lonely, damaged protagonist. The narrator was excellent, hooking me in from the first sentence. I loved her versatility with voices, her pace and consistency. She was helped by the excellence of Kellerman - he is such a clever writer. I did not give the story 5 * because, at points, it was not a perfect construction. I mean characters 'disappeared'. However, I really enjoyed listening to this. Felt slightly desolated when it finished.

Enjoyable

The story is enjoyable, the plot is quite convoluted in places with a great deal of scene setting. My one real criticism is the end is very abrupt. The book is billed as a stand alone, but I would certainly be happy to read a follow on

J Kellerman not up to form with this one

Sorry to disagree with the majority of reviews but I had several gripes about this book.

Characterisation : Wish I had a penny for each glowing description of Grace - clever, beautiful, fit, clever, resourceful, stylish, clever ad nauseam. Most of the other characters were presented only in how they reacted to Grace's copious attributes.

Plot : To avoid spoilers I'll just say that my disbelief can be suspended only so far.

Pace : Erratic. It started fine, but slowed down and down only to break into a breakneck bolt for the finale.

Reader : I personally find the breathy, super-feminine qualities of this reader's voice irritating. Others may not.
